Little update, not played a ton, but have done disgustingly well at these stupid things. With my drunken bravado I entered a 70+5 super turbo and took it down for 315, which was absolutely hysterical since I've done things similar to this a few times in the past, and I call it every time. Then I jumped to the 28s and have owned those with major lucksackery and hands holding. Just yesterday went 1 2 8 2 3 3 1 8 5 3. Yeah. Noice. Sitting on 950 now, which is probably the most ridiculous thing in the history of time, but I'm super pleased. Pays for my flight to Florida, all kinds of random bills I need to pay at home, and whatever else I decide to spend some dough on. Great stuff.

PLAY A SUPER TURBO. It will change your life.

Redeye, Pinkeye, and...SUPER TURBOS!?!?! YES!
Permalink Posted 11:28 am in Categories: Poker

Been back for about a week now after a lovely redeye flight from Vancouver, and now I have pinkeye. Balls. Well that's never happened before. Two different colored eye events in a week. Oh-em-gee.

Ship was cool, same ship doing the same run, so it was a bit less exciting. Mostly stayed on in port and became a gym rat, then killed all the progress I made in the last two weeks of my contract by self-medicating with heavy drinking. Winner.

Sit at home for a few days trying to sleep and readjust to the fact that I have more than 10 square feet of space to live in when I realize "Hey, I used to play poker, maybe I've still got money online somewhere." Sure enough, Fulltilt has 200 clams, Pokerstars a monumental 5 dollars, which I promptly lost in a turbo SNG. Lost with the best hand too. Rigged. Said nuts to poker for a few days, then by a stroke of pure luck putzing around the Fulltilt lobby, I discovered the most beautiful form of poker ever created. Super turbos.

For those of you out there who enjoy depriving yourselves of awesomeness, a super turbo is just like a regular turbo, but FASTER. Duh. Start with 300 chips, blinds are 15/30, go up every 3 minutes. Oh the deliciousness and lucksackery. It's basically endgame of regular turbos, which, as lousy as I am at most forms of poker, tends to be one of my stronger points, and one that I feel I actually have a minor edge over my opponents in at wee stakes. Basically, I push more than the average schmo. The irony of course being that these are super turbos, so really, there's no edge to anyone ever. But I'll keep telling myself otherwise and letting the small sums of money roll on in. Plus I can easily play like 30 in a day since they take no more than 20 minutes tops, average like 13 if you a winnah. It's definitely weird though. That pretty suited ace you've got there, which normally you'd love with 10BB, now becomes shit when you have it in EP the first hand. Maybe it's just me, but I'm finding that early on, my push range still isn't HUGE, especially from EP. Kinda makes sense I guess, with so many to act behind you, just weird with the tiny stacks. Different dynamic. It's also staggering and slightly upsetting how many people raise preflop, then fold to pushes, or simply raise to steal when they themselves only have 8 blinds. Exploiting said stupidity is where teh monies come from.

By running miraculous yesterday after I jumped to the 14s from the 7s severely underrolled, I now have $400 in Fulltilt. Go figure. Time to move up again! Yeehaw.

Hope everything with everyone is going well, may all your cards be live pots be monsters fold preflop etc etc. Come on IRC, it's dead there.

Shippin back down to Miami in a few hours, so don't expect any updates. Not that there would really be any anyways, but in case the IRC guys were wondering where I disappeared off to. Poker sucks and I hate it. Caribbean is better. So is making money instead of losing it. +EV and all that. Happy trails, see you all in four months or so.

Guess I'm not motivated enough to keep this thing up. Oh well. Also, I suck really bad, and don't feel like posting my repeated failures at anything poker related. My SNG magic has apparently left me, as I can't even beat the $16 turbos on Stars, so it's mostly been splashing around in tournaments and random sessions of SNGs, Stud8, and LHE. Slowly bleeding money away until I randomly go somehwat deep in a tournament and make up some of what I lost. Alas, it only prolongs the eventual brokeski-ing.

In other news, I began 8 tabling whilst doing my SNGs, which was hilarious because my computer really can't handle it. Might explain my poor performances though, since maybe I can't handle it either, but meh, it's rather intense and kind of a good time until you bubble four tournaments in four hands. Then you cry. Then you reload four more. Nyuk nyuk nyuk.

It would appear that my motivation to succeed at poker has all but left me, so it's probably a good thing that I'm just messing around with small potatos and don't have a few grand online like I did last time I lost my motivation. That went poorly. I still enjoy it to some degree, but any notion of making money at this game has flown out the window. I'm sure if I were more disciplined and took it more seriously, I could be a winning player, and the past has proven that I think, having built decent rolls up a couple times, only to withdraw a chunk then piss away the rest. Lifetime I would say I'm up, though not by much, which I'm fine with at this point. I don't need to make mirrions to enjoy what I'm doing like I used to think. It used to be all about make money win money move up make more win more keep moving up. Now it's kinda meh, yeah I guess I'll go play 3/6 Stud8 with a $500 bankroll. Oh $30 tournament? Giddyup. Do what I want within reason so I don't blow my entire roll in 10 minutes, but be flexible and have fun with it. I'm sure also that if I were still able to play poker all the time I'd be more into it and more serious about it, but not being able to play for four months at a time makes you rethink what you want to get out of the game. Side cash is nice, but maybe I just want to blow off steam for a month while I'm on vacation. Probably kind of tough to not play for a few months then jump right back into 5/10 online too.

This ended up being a lot longer and more scatterbrained than I had intended. Oops. Only really meant to do that first paragraph as a quick update. The things you end up doing when you have had nothing to do for a month.

In a drunken stupor, I lost the rest of my stars money donking around with Sean at .50/1. Bummer. Decided to reload with echecks to take advantage of their modest deposit bonus and have been 4 tabling .50/1 to try and clear the bonus. Splashing around with 1/2 as well. About halfway there right now, not moving very quickly, but up ~$30, which is fantastic considering I've pissed about $60 on random tournaments I have no chance of cashing in. Except for that PLO8, which I rocked, then tanked with about 30 people left. Went from 2nd to out in like 5 hands.

I've learned that I need to call down with random A high hands a hell of a lot more. I'm sure it's just the level I'm playing at, but jebus people are tossing money at these pots with nothing. I never really made these types of calls before, and yeah you're wrong now and again, but meh, you get to learn a little more about your opponent and what they're betting with. You also pick off a ton of people firing arbitrarily with J8 on a 29K board when it's been checked to them. Not like this is anything new to anybody reading it, duh, but nonetheless it remains another mini-breakthrough in the world of Ham. See Ham win. Win Ham, win.

In other news, home is ridiculously boring, so I'm flying down to DC later today to visit a friend and hang out there for a few days. See some cool stuff hopefully, play some tennis, get out of the bitter cold into...less bitter cold. Play live poker too, and probably get my ass handed to me, because this guy luckboxes against me like no other. I also play stupid against him due to said luckboxing, because I'm never convinced he has it EVERY time when he raises me, so I push back with less than quality holdings to "make my stand." Sure enough though, he does, and he never fails to raise me, and never fails to bust me. Asshole...

Later days.
