1 big question
Gday guys, I’m new to all this but I have 1 question.
A month ago I purchased one of the texas holdem games off the internet and have been playing it non-stop. I thought I purchased it off this website but I’m not sure. It’s called Tik’s Texas Holdem and it has all sorts of tournaments and scenarios you can play. Sorry If I’m stating the obvious but as I said I’m only new to all this.
Anyway my question is this:
What do you experienced players think of these onscreen downloadable games?. Are they a waste of time and are they simply made to lure you to real money games by making you think you're a champ??
I play the game all the time and watch Poker all the time on telly and I’ve got to the point where I win just about every tournament I play (on the computer game that is) including 1000 player 100 table tournaments. Does this mean I am any good or am I just being fooled into believing I’m half decent???? Having watched the pro's on telly so much now I feel like I know what's going on but I'm not really sure. All sounds too easy. The only time i played a live game with my mates I fleeced them but they're just a bunch of cowboys who bet on every hand
I’d love to know what you think about these games.
Cheers

If you're winning every single tournament, the software is rigged. For a better representation of real poker, you may want to download a real poker software and play for play money, or even deposit a few dollars and play microstakes.

Thanks very much for the quick response.....yeah I probably exaggerated a bit - I don't actually win every tournament but pretty much always get to the final 2 at a single table sit and go and I won the 1000 player grand tournament after playing for a couple of weeks (having been knocked out earlier every time prior to that).
I just figured if the game is meant to be anything like the real thing a mug like me should be finishing 900th, not 1st after only a couple of weeks.
Could you possibly tell me where I can find that real poker software you speak of and also microstakes. I have been keen to try the real money stuff but didn't know where to go.
Also, do you know if I need broadband to play online? - I only have dial up.....also I'm in Australia - can i play from here?
Sorry for the thousand questions. Just put it down to an enthusiastic beginner.
Cheers mate

No probs, sir.
Dial up is fine, but could prove to be a little annoying if you continuously get disconnected.
http://www.pokerstars.com. This is a popular poker website where you can play for both real and play money.
Enjoy.

re
wait a minute.
Video games, with no reason to rig it, rig it ?? There is no benefit
to be made from rigging it, I mean WHY o WHY would they rig it ?
Plus, we all know its infinitely impossible to rig software for poker. It
would take oh so much programming and manpower, that it wouldnt
be worth it, especially with no money to be made.
Maybe all the super intelligent pro's here can explain ???? Why rig a video game poker, with no real money involved ??? Woah is me !
Answer : Possibly to make you keep playing the game, and feel good, and think your better than you are.
I cant think of any other venues to apply this concept to though. Weird

Re: re
Sqwerty remember that you’re training on a simulator. So you’re only going to get experience as good as the AI you’re facing and most no limit texas hold’em AI is average to poor.
If you want any real experience you need to play with people who don’t want to lose. I’d recommend starting out on the micro limit tables or playing some home games with friends.
Indeed I can’t see a point either.
I think Leaf means that no one should win every game regardless of how good you are, variance would dictate that you should cope at least a couple of bad beats. Later Sqwerty explained that this was just an exaggeration.
Is the sarcasm? Because a stand alone game wouldn’t be very hard to code so that the player won.

Then why do you keep losing so much and feel like shite? I hardly doubt anyone this angsty about poker (especially with illogical rants on internet forums where we simply ignore morons, for the most part) would be a winning player - you can't have it both ways: is it rigged in our favour or against us?
If it's easier, why do you still suck balls?
If it's hard, why am I rich?

re
Supafrey,
I dont play online poker, but I watch it.
I win an overwhelming amount in live play weekly.
Im good.
If you win at online poker, then you have adapted to
the 'fake' game that it is... so good for you.
A good poker player, that plays real poker, will get
smashed online, playing a solid GOOD game. FACT.
Its a very simple LOGICAL reason. The software is
handicapped, to PREVENT trapping. Every good LIVE
player knows when and how to Trap an unsuspecting BAD
player.
Apply these techniques online, and you will lose every cent
you own, by design, in the long run. And not from DONKS and
newbs. By design, I mean, the opponent/s WILL have
almost unfoldable 17 outters, so no matter the betting, no matter
the pot size, and no matter anything ---- someone is calling,
and the software already determined the cards that are falling.
All that matters is which draw stuck around.
Read that last bit again and again. Dont act stupid. I never said every
hand, but WAAAAY too many are set up just like this.
SOMEBODY RUN THOSE F'KN NUMBERS FOR ONCE, and quit preachin' your "everybody is honest, I swear" speech.
Sup, I dont play online, but you already "KNOW" I lose so much money online. You are brilliant !
Whats your IQ ? ( Dont really want to know, but want to laugh when you post a made up one)

Before this gets ugly, I'd just like to give my take on all of this. Personally I don't beleive that online play is rigged or altered in any way, shape or form - It's as random as it can possibly be. So just how random is it?
I had a good discussion with a particular player who has played many hands both online and live (many many) and his approach is as follows.
Online poker cannot be entirely random due to algorythms and tendencies to repeat occured data and what not. With that being said, he beleives that the odds of (for example) of flushes and straights appearing are increased by a few percentages. He came to this conclusion after playing many hands on Stars, Party, Full Tilt, Absolute, and the list goes on.
He said that when I begin to play a larger amount of live hands VS online hands, I may begin to notice these trends more accurately.

We notice what we choose to notice; we ignore what we choose to ignore. Why, for example, would the natural state of the online algorithm lean toward completing flushes and straights instead of missing them? Both sides are equally arbitrary.
Live poker can't be completely random either, fwiw. Ever played in games with people that aren't particularly adept at shuffling? Ever start dealing a hand and then realize you're not really sure if the deck was shuffled at all?
Of course, you could only play in casinos that use the autoshufflers now, but those are probably rigged to scan the cards and arrange them in such a way as to generate action.

Well, every online hand is logged, or at least can be. Lots of people run the numbers. That's why Poker Tracker exists, to do exactly that. Again, enormously more transparent and accountable in practice than any live game.
