11.5 g / 8.5g / 7.4g chip differences
Hey folks,
I purchased a 300 set of "8.5g" suited (Chinese) chips a month or so ago. I was very content with the chips but wanted to expand my set so I recently ordered 400 chips from 5stardeal.com. (after much snooping around)
I've found a few things:
1. The chips I originally are smaller in diameter (ever so slightly, .08 inches) and they are a little lighter. They are, however, "better quality" - the fit and finish seems better.
2. I got some sample chips from VIPtrades and all of the 11.5 gram chips were, while heavy, metallic sounding and feeling. They kind of felt like large white coins or something. I was not very happy with them.
3. I ordered 350 8.5g chips (suited) from 5star and the chips I got were larger (just as large as the 11.5g chips) and conesequently bigger than my current 8.5g chips (in weight). They also did not feel very finished.
4. The chips I got (11.5 g, purple, suited) from 5star were VERY nice. They feel very much like I remember clay chips and they (very important) stick together very well (they stack well). The heavy feel is nice, but the good stacking is very important.
Where I'm confused is that I also received a similar (suited, 11.5g, red) chip from viptrades.com and the chip was very metallic, tinny, and did not stick (or stack) well at all.
How many different people make these chips? And, with the feel being very nice on the 11.5 chips from 5star, what is the advantage of the authentic clay chips?
Additionally, I am working on ap process to label my chips. I am planning on printing on (maybe laminated) self-adhesive paper and using a home-made cutting device to put the labels on my chips. Has anyone figured out a good way to put "inset" labels on their chips?
Thanks,
-Drew

i can't answer the questions about the chips... but i know for sure that you can buy full sheets of "sticker" type paper. i'm sure it comes in high gloss... so making your own labels shouldn't be hard at all for ya. some sort of cutting device should be pretty easy to fabricate... a trip to the hardware store, the right diameter pipe and a metal file and you have an instant cutting device...

I wonder if anyone has done this.
How do they print on the real poker chips? Some sort of complicated printing technique?
Anyway, I'm considering if I want to laminate them or not.
