11.5 vs 9 gram

Postby Mad Max » Sat Apr 24, 2004 12:18 pm GMT

I'm looking to buy some new poker chips to replace the old ones that my friends and I currently use. Right now we use these old, lousy, mixed, cheap, plastic poker chips that I found in my basement. I've been looking through 5stardeal and pokerchipmart along with ebay. I don't think the 2.5 grams will make a difference, especially to us students who have never used a half decent chip. If someone could just confirm my thinking.

Also I've seen talk in past messages about promotional codes for discounts or free shipping at online retailers. If someone could tell me these codes or where I could get these codes I would appreciate it. Thanks for your help.

Hey Max. I've got the plain 9g diamond chips. I really like them a lot. They don't feel as 'plastic' as the heavier ones and they stack easier (a friend of mine has the 11.5g AJsuited chips with the metal insert). The 9g are also cheaper, so you can buy a ton of them if you want to. I thought about upgrading to the 11.5g ones, but I'm going to save that money and maybe buy some 'professional' chips next year. Just my $.02.

Are professional chips like the james bond ones and the chips on the chipco site?

Personally I have the 11.5g striped dice 1000 chip set from 5stardeal. It is good. I don't have the 9g chips myself but everybody who does seems to be satisfied with them. I think it comes down to two factors, money and edge marks.

If you want edge marks and like the two-tone white/color design of the 11.5g chips go with those. They are about twice as much as the 9g super diamond chips though, so if you don't care about edge marks than you can save money or get more of the 9g super diamond chips for the same price.

Either way it would be good. Depending on how many people you want to be able to host you could get the 1000 chip sets from 5stardeal for either $100 for 9g super diamond or $200 for 11.5g striped dice. It's a good set. I'd recommend spending another $30-45 on 2-3 decks of Kem cards too, so factor that into your budget.

Yeah Max. The chipco ones are the ones I like right now, but who know a year from now.

I do plan on buying some KEM cards. Also I dont know why but the edge marks are very appealing to me. So I will probably end up not buying the diamond ones.
They do make 9 gram dice/suited/diamond with the edge marks correct? Or is that only on 11 gram chips.

Silencer, i think www.pokerchipmart has abetter package deal on a 1000 11 gram chips. You get 1000 chips,2 500 cases and some decks of cards, and i think that for about 180 bucks, then you can just throw some nice racks in like the 5 star deal set.. But browse around, you may geta better deal.

How much shipping? I don't know if they have them now but sometimes on 5stardeal you can use a free shipping code so it costs you $200 total for the 1000 chip set. They also don't have as many colors but it still looks like a good deal.

I agree about edge marks though. That's why I got the 11.5g. The plain color chips look to bland to me. With edge marks the chip stacks look neat from the side and there is lots of face design so they look great from the front too.

I just bought dice striped 11.5's to replace the 9 gram diamond chips of my friends because of these reasons:

-they look nicer, with the stripes
-they feel nicer (the weight isn't the major factor), with a smooth center rather than a rough one
-rounded edges...the 9gram diamonds have crappy, sharp edges that have "shavings" from shotty production
-they clink nicely when you drop them or stack them, while the 9 grams are dull and plasticy
-they are easier to shuffle, maybe because of the more rounded edges

lmk if you need more reasons
