8.5 vs 11.5 grams

problem with buying from casino though... is unless you have mad cash... you'll only be able to get your low denom chips that way. i mean... even spending a buck a chip is too much for me at this point, but i can see someone willing to do that... but that gives you a single color. and you can get the lower demons that way too perhaps... so say you could walk away with 2, maybe 3 colors if you buy from a casino... but if you wanted some 5 or 10 dollar chips... are you really gonna spend 500 or 1000 bucks just to purchase 100 chips?

My friends and I recently purchased a 300 piece chipset- clay, 11.5 grams. REALLY nice stuff, edge spots, no denominations on them either.
300 bucks in total, but we knew the guy at the Game Store (the actual name of the store, and my new candy store) so we got a 50% discount.
Nice stuff.
If you're still debating whether or not to go for the 11.5 grams over the 9 or 8, go for the 11. I'ev played with cheap plastic chips, I've played with decent clay chips, but nothing compares to my 11.5 gram chips!

Not to bring you down or anything, but first off the 11.5 gram chips are not clay, they are plastic around a metal insert. Still nice, but not clay. Also, if you paid $300 for 300 chips you are absolutely insane. You can get a set of 1,000 11.5g striped dice chips for $200, including trays (but no case). If you want a case you can find a 500 chip set with aluminum case for like $150.
Adding my input. I have one of the 1,000 chip texas holdem 11.5g striped dice sets from 5stardeal ($200 in online specials section). I think they are nice. Like you I REALLY wanted authentic clay chips and I looked around a lot at various custom chips. In the end though the price was the deciding factor. I knew I wanted 1,000 chips but at $0.50 each for blank plain color chips or $1 each for customs it was just too expensive. I can't justify spending $500-$1000 on poker chips. Alternatively the super diamond 9g chips seem to have a good reputation but I really wanted the edge spots and they were plain color.
In the end I pretty much concluded that the best deal you'll get anywhere on chips with edge marks is the 1,000 chip texas holdem set from 5stardeal for $200 (they have 2 sets, one is $100 and has super diamond color chips, the one I got was $200 but has 11.5g striped dice). Ok so they are plastic chips with a metal insert but they are still nice and at like $0.20 each they are by far the cheapest chips with edge marks of any sort that I've seen.
If you really can't decide I recommend ordering a couple of the 11.5g striped dice and 9g super diamond chips. They may be plastic but for most people I think they are good enough. If you don't like them you're only out like $20 and when you drop $500+ on nice chips you'll have no doubt that the money was worth spending.

Quick question about those chips from 5star: do they stick together at all? Do they sound metallic when they hit each other, or do they sound "heavy"?
I got some of the 5star suited 11.5gm chips and I'm really impressed, but I want edge spotted chips.

Don't the suited ones you have have little dots around the edge of the chip? What is wrong with that? Either way this is the set that I have...

I ordered different colors than the standard option shown in the picture but it's a nice set I think. I got 400 black 400 red and 200 purple.
As far as sticking together I haven't really noticed it at all. Not when playing at least. The sound depends a lot on what surface you're playing on. In our games we basically just slide stacks around so they never really make noise at all so it's hard to say. I never really noticed what they sound like. If you have 11.5g suited chips though I would expect the behavior and sound of them to be virtually identical. The suited chips you have are basically identical to the striped dice chips I have except that they have a different visual pattern. I suppose it's possible they have a different feel or sound to them but I'd really really doubt it.

The reason I ask is that I have sample chips from 3 different vendors and they have three different feels and three different sounds.
I like 5star's the best. I asked them to send me samples but I've gotten no response so far. I just want to make sure they are the same. The 11.5's stack from 5star stack much better than the 8.5's and the 11.5's i have from other places.
