Adjusting Sound Poker Strategy?

Postby MuddyGrimes » Mon Feb 09, 2004 12:30 pm GMT

I am interested in hearing others opinions on this topic? I have been playing a lot of poker online and am seriously bewildered by the number of players calling a preflop raise with a 36 off suit or 2 7 off suit in the little blind. I thought that if I started playing the 3/6 tables that I would see alot less of this...

I am weary of playing bigger stakes online so I am thinking of adjusting my poker strategy and wonder if others do this?

Normally if I am in an early position I only play PREMIUM hands if I am a middle position and the players in front of me have folded...I will lower my hand selection slightly...same for late position or the blinds..

However, if their is a raise after I called on a "lesser" hand unless it is a pair in the pocket and others have called to sweeten the pot I will always fold em.

That being said...I am seriously considering after watching hand after of players playing weak hands preflop raising with a suited Q6 just hoping to catch a flush or q6flop... of increasing the number of hands I play...

What are the opinions of others on the increased cost of seeing the flop with less than premium hands vs playing the the premium hands and trying to the most of them?

I would say don't change your play just to do like others that play almost anything pre-flop. You're just lowering your play to their standards. It might seem like they're hitting more hands than they should but I would say that they're missing more than they're catching in the long run. Play your game and hit them hard when you make your hands. Maybe someone else has a different opinion but that's just my thoughts on it.

I would take a look at how many players are in a hand. If I am in the small blind w/ 5 or 6 callers I will call many more hands than if there was only one or two calling a raise.

Also, I will rarely fold one raise preflop if I have already committed one bet. I dont play too many weak hands, w/ low pocket pairs or 89 suited being the worst, so what is one more bet to win a big pot. You know right off the flop if you have a chance. Also, pay close attention to the action of the player that raised. If an A is flopped, does he check indicating KK QQ.

Also, watch who is raising. Many will raise w/ A 10, A 8 suited, 99 10/10, JJ QQ and many more weak hands. Others will raise only w/ premium hands. Myself, I may raise or fold the same hand depending on others. If I am in late position w/ A 8 and everyone folds before me, I may raise. If there are 2 callers before, I will likely fold.
