Advertiser Mix in Televised Poker

Postby lwestatbus » Mon Jan 29, 2007 1:44 pm GMT

Just last week was the first time I noticed a huge shift in the advertiser mix on replays of WSOP on ESPN. The shift was away from the predominance of Internet poker sites with the sprinkling of beer commercials to a more normal mix of advertising you might seen in any sports broadcast, including some for network TV shows.

I don't know if the shift was a fluke or indicative of what we will see from now on. If a permanent shift it could be:

1) The result of the new regulatory environment making it less profitable for the online sites to advertise

--or--

2) An indicator of the popularity of televised poker making it attractive to a wider mix of advertisers.

It was certainly refreshing to not be seeing the horrible repetition of the same comercials break after break.

I don't get the adverts Larry, all the adverts are removed before I get the show... but I would imagine it is a combination of both points, televised poker is moving into the mainstream, Poker after dark is on (one of) the biggest networks, albeit in a late night slot.

i had heard that a male impotency drug was a popular ad on tv shows, Is this still the case?

I'm so jealous. I just have to Tivo everything and fast forward through the commercials.

I see more of the "male enhancement" commercials than Viagra-esque ones. These are the worst! Apparently there are a lot of men out there who have some serious self-confidence issues.

lwestatbus, I think it is a mixture of both of your points instead of just one or the other. It would be a waste of money for Party to advertise in the US and the ratings for poker shows have consistantly risen since the airing of Moneymaker's WSOP win.
