Advice needed!!

Postby johno2010 » Thu Mar 11, 2010 8:07 pm GMT

Hi im doing a little research on texas hold em poker and increasingly getting sucked into myself, was just wondering what peoples general thoughts were to the game, why you love it, do you play it much and is it the internet or casino.

Are you any good at it, whats your biggest win... what makes this game so fasinating??

Also, if you were a average player, if you could improve your game would you and how?

Just general info would be great!

thanks

Love it cause I love card games. Poker is the only card game that isn't pure luck that I can't master :( That is why I love it so much it is a challenge.

I play at home games and casino the most online not often I need to have the cards in my hand to play my best IDK why but that is same for any card game for me.

The thing that would improve my game the most would be patience. I always do good till I get impatient. That and chasing draws.

I learned to play poker online, where i started for free and playing in freerolls. I guess what poker benefits me to make a right decision, discipline where i used to follow the rules and proper poker etiquette and taking a control over my loss and money to bet by building a bankroll.

Discipline, money management, mental exercise, competition, skill development, time management and the best way ever to judge results, $$$$$$.

The realisation of confidence past is a revelation.

True, discipline is important to nay poker player, if you don't consistently have discipline at poker you're not going to be a winning poker player in the long run.

Really a good question.

I thought I was pretty good at poker but not so much any more. Or maybe I'm just unlucky. But I truly love the game.

I love online because you can play any time you have some free time and the huge variety of stakes means that I can always find a game that fits my financial comfort level. I love casinos because I often end up having a good time with the other players in the game. I also have 'friends' in my online games but typing chat isn't quite the same thing.

I love poker because it is a 'sport' that a 55-year-old with fading knees can play. I can compete and measure myself without having to exert myself.

There is a zen-like quality to poker. Playing properly means really being in the moment and I enjoy that. While I don't compete any more I have always (and still do) enjoyed target shooting with both handguns and with archery. Shooting precisely also requires being in the moment and I sometimes have the same feeling with poker. Jeff mentioned discipline and this is part of that feeling. But I can also sit down at a low stakes game and just kill some time for cheap sometimes.

Finally, I am constantly finding poker metaphores for other things I encounter in life. This is REALLY hard to explain so I won't try but I am constantly amazed at how situations I am in or observing can be cast in a poker metaphore and how much clarity that view offers.

Again, great question.

I guess part of being a a disciplined poker player is to have a distinction that distinguishes a great poker player than a good poker player and gives him a good position in every game
