Another question that someone much cleverer than me may be able to answer

I have been asked to work out the following and I really don't want to get it wrong.

A tournament has 1,000 players all starting with 3,000 in chips. The blinds will start at 25/50 and rise every 15 minutes. There will be unlimited re-buys and 1 add on per player for the first hour how many chips will we need and what are the best denominations???

I am thinking per player

4 x 25
4 x 50
7 x 100
4 x 500

Multiply this by 1000 for the initial chips and then by 500 to take into consideration re-buys and Add-ons?

Am I close?

Your opinions greatly appreciated!!

First of all - there should not be a 50 chip. The chips denominations will go 25, 100, 500, 1,000, 5,000 (maybe a 2,000 rarely) etc.

The best way to give someone 3,000 chips is:

8 x 25
8 x 100
2 x 500
1 x 1,000

It is a good idea to have a lot more 25s and 100s in play as the early levels of 25/50, 50/100, 75/150 etc will need them.

So to start you will need:
8,000 x 25
8,000 x 100
2,000 x 500
1,000 x 1,000

Rebuys of 3,000 chips should be given solely as 3 x 1,000 chips. The player rebuying can get change where necessary from the other players at the table. It will be unnecessary to have smaller chips as part of the rebuy otherwise the physical number of chips in play becomes way too high.

I think with regard to the number of rebuys and add-ons you are WAY off on your numbers. I'd assume an average of two rebuys per player and that 90% of the remaining players will add on. Let's say only 5% of the field disappears during the rebuy period, that means 1,000 x 0.95 x 0.9 = 855 players will want an add on.

I would therefore expect at least 2,000 rebuys and 855 add-ons so might as well round it to 3,000. That means you need 12 million chips minimum at your disposal for the effective 6,000 buy-ins.

Two rebuys per player is a pretty conservative estimate if the tournament buy-in is small by the way so I'd have 15 million chips around with a value of 1,000 or less just in case..................
