Anybody happy with a ceramic chip?

Postby vyni » Thu Jun 14, 2007 7:31 pm GMT

I know, I know.
Clay clay clay clay clay clay.

But I came across a guy selling his custom chip set, which were ceramics made by 'sunfly'... which appear to be avail at http://sun-fly-pokerchips.com/index.htm

The site's 'blanks' are available with either smooth or textured faces: I'm very curious as to what they are like. The only weight I see mentioned is 10g though. They do have a sampler for sale... $25 + $38 shipping for 25 blanks and 25 decorated? A little steep for samples imho.

The edges of these chips are what immediately caught my attention:

Those printed edges are outstanding, imho.
Anybody have ceramic experience/opinions to share on this?
Anywhere I can get custom clay with edge work like this (though on clay I would imagine that the edges would wear too much).

I have a set of these that I bought a couple of years ago. They're nice, but I'd have probably bought a set of Paulson's instead had they been available at the time.

As for the weight, I'm fairly certain all ceramics are 10g chips. I don't know of any clay chips that have artwork on the rolling edge.

Some Thoughts

The HardRock Seminole casino in Hollywood Florida and the local card room at the dog track both use a ceramic chip that seem similar to the set you are considering. I've used them quite a bit. They do seem to have the disadvantage of leaving my stack faster than they come in.

IMHO there is nothing wrong with these chips for home use. The weight and feel are fine. They clink and click quite a bit (to be expected). They also stack nicely.

The chips at the dog track have gotten VERY worn in the two years they have been in use. But these get a LOT of use. I don't think you'd have much problem for a home game set.

It sounds from your post as if you are buying an already-made set. One really nice feature of these chips is that you get the whole surface for your design plus the custom edge.

I know of two companies that will make these custom for you at prices under $1/ea with pretty steep discounts as the quantities go up. One is:

http://www.pokerchiplounge.com/products/products_view/704_1.html

and the other is

https://www.thechiplab.com/index.php

Also check out MasterShake's chips in a post in this forum http://www.texasholdem-poker.com/forum/t21424/new-custom-label-designs. He got them from the company in my second URL and I'll bet he'd be happy to share his experiences.
