Same stuff, different day

Permanent Linkby K-rug on Fri Jun 01, 2007 10:47 pm GMT

The second day yielded more of the same. I played mostly turbo SnGs with a quick stint on a .5/1 NL table (about 15 minutes) while bored waiting for the wifey to finish preparing dinner.

After dinner I jumped on a few SnGs while the wife watched her Tivo’d soap operas. I took one or two horrendous beats in a couple of the SnGs early on. Who doesn’t though? Everyone has a story about AA getting cracked by 73 suited, a runner runner draw or gut shot that hit. It’s poker. It happens.

At the end of the day four things made me happy.

First, my initial deposit of $50 to test out the waters after almost a year not playing is up to $140 since yesterday evening just by playing SnGs.

Second was this hand:

Why does this make me happy? This guy was one of those guys that always raised no matter what position or what his cards were pre-flop every… single… time. Consistently and without fail he would raise 3x the BB.

I hate those guys. I gave him no credit. He could have had me beat. But there was no way to judge based on his actions. I figured he was trying to take the pot down and I was right. I just had one of those feelings. His remaining 150 or so chips were taken from him on the next hand and he was bounced out of the tournament. Like an armchair QB on Sundays during football season I smiled and cheered at my monitor as if he could see and hear me. Rude... I know... But I really hate those kind of guys.

The play wasn’t an extraordinary play. That’s not what I am happy about. It’s hard not to go all in with trip Kings in this situation with four people left, you are on the bubble and a conservative player called your raise pre-flop

I really didn’t think this guy called my 320 bet pre-flop in the small blind with Q9 or 69. He was a fabulous player hardly making any mistakes. He had 4x my stack and was just trying to knock me out I thought and was right.

What I like about this hand is what it demonstrates and means. You’ll notice I was in last place chip wise on the bubble with four players left. I was picking and choosing when to play and just staying calm. Lady luck smiled on me and I went on to take second.

Patience… It’s one of the hardest things to have. Sometimes patience pays off when she gets lady luck drunk and they both decide to reward you at the same time. Lots of people see they are in last place and on the bubble and just go all-in with seemingly crap because they haven't gotten a hand in what feels like an eternity. I’m not saying wait for KK. But you have to pick and choose your shots and with a little luck you can come back and finish in the money.

Last on my list is not a hand. But a comment made during a SnG. If you play online poker you know how people can be. They are either really chatty or tight lipped. People either think they are the next Phil Ivy or are humble. So when you are quiet and playing your game doing your thang making it to the final three of a SnG and in guaranteed money it’s nice when this happens.

$20+2 Turbo SnG

on the second hand I don't really like the min raise when you have less than 8xBB... the min raise gives too good of odds for a mediocre Ace to call and because your min raise puts 25% of your stack out there on the flop you're pot commited and end up pushing or calling a push no matter what... push preflop and make your opponent make the mistake of getting AI while behind...

I agree 100%. But sometimes I just can't help but slow play KK and AA. You'd think I would have learned my lesson after five years. It's still a habit I'm trying to break. In fact, I slow played AA in the same SnG and it bit me in the ass as the person caught a straight on the flop too... One of these days...

HAHAHAHA then sometimes when you push and get called by two people and one catches trips... The other mystery is how I didn't go all in and left 10 chips. But that's another story.
