Quitting time ...

Permanent Linkby TheSalche on Sun Jan 07, 2007 11:40 am GMT

Last few days were insane ... I had a great run at 50NL for a while and got my roll up to $980ish and then managed to piss away two buy-ins, some bad beatish, some bad play. Then today after not playing for about 2 days I sat down at the 3/6 stud 8/b and made $20 over a 180 hands or so. Then I just opened up two tables of hi/lo and hi at the 2/4 limit. Well one table was really fun, you know, villain hits the case jack to beat my aces up, and I finally busted out when I had KK3K and my villain had 69J9 with 3 clubs and 6th and 7th streets were two more clubs. Did I fill up? Nah ... why the f*ck would I?

I'm seriously considering quitting poker again and tucking my tail between my legs and running with the winnings I've made so far ... I can't take these swings and bad beats at stud anymore, I don't think I have to mental stamina to grind out 25/50/100 NL right now.

Play tournaments! Either sit-n-gos or MTTS, both of which will put a stop-loss on the amount of money you can lose in a session, and it gives you different perspective on many hannds.

Although if you can't handle the swings of 1-3 buyins then you need work on your mental stamina. Just wait till you drop 5-6-7 buyins successively.

But yeah, there's no reason to quit. Force yourself to keep the 800 or 700$ bankroll and play NL25 at like 4 or more tables. Or sit and gos. But you should lower limit yourself slightly, completely stop thinking about the long term, and completely focus on making good decisions. AND learn how to be a very good multi-tabler (if you aren't already) because muti-tabling is the single reason that online > live.

Salche, if I could make a small suggestion...

From what I know, you are a hell of a SnG player, and I KNOW you could destroy the $11's on Stars, and I think you could make a decent win rate off the $22's and $33's. You're a better SnG player than I am, and I was only marginally successful at the $22's and $33's. But maybe this could help put your BR into better shape for moving up. When building a roll, it is usually better to play the games where you expect to win the most. When you're a little more comfortable, you can branch out again. Take a break from Stud if you want.

Going bust, or close enough to it, is something all Poker players must experience from time to time. You will get through it.

Well, I'm not really even close to bust, I still have $750 left, but the downswing in stud is killing me. I may switch to SnGs for a while, but I have to play quite a bit of them to start to show a profit. We'll see ... I'll figure something out by tonight.
