The Art of the 3bet

Permanent Linkby TheSalche on Wed Jan 24, 2007 9:03 pm GMT

Since my video apparently didn't work on anybody's computer except mine, I'll just talk about something.

I managed to get a little tilt in a guy using the 3bet. Unfortunately I didn't get his stack but I feel like I played the hand well.

Villain and I have no history, he's running around 19/19 over 30 hands. I tend to open up my 3bet range a bit in the blinds, because I prefer to take the pot down there, and I usually do.

Seat 1: villain($49.75 in chips)
Seat 4: Sonny617 ($52.50 in chips)
Seat 5: xxxxx($52.40 in chips)
Sonny617: posts small blind $0.25
xxxxx: posts big blind $0.50
*** HOLE CARDS ***
Dealt to Sonny617 [Qh Ah]
folds
villain: raises $1.50 to $2
2 folds
Sonny617: raises $4 to $6
xxxxx: folds
villain: calls $4
*** FLOP *** [Ks Js 8c]
Sonny617: bets $8
villain: folds
Sonny617 collected $11.90 from pot

I was actually really surprised he didn't hit this flop ... I suppose he had a low PP, which is understandable. Very next hand I get a dreamer and a great opportunity.

Seat 1: villain ($50 in chips) NOTICE HE RELOADED
Seat 4: Sonny617 ($58.40 in chips)
*** HOLE CARDS ***
Dealt to Sonny617 [Qh Qc]
myke11: raises $1.50 to $2
2 folds
Sonny617: raises $5 to $7
blinds fold
villain: calls $5
*** FLOP *** [6s Th 9h]
villain: checks
Sonny617: bets $10
villain: raises $10 to $20
Sonny617: raises $31.40 to $51.40 and is all-in
villain: folds

So preflop, I figured he would loosen up his calling range here, after what just happened to him on that last hand, and I raised a bit more. The flop comes down very nicely, no overcards, but it is still plenty drawy so I don't want him getting there cheaply.

His min-raise said either a. I have the straight/set/AA/KK or b. Nice try to bluff, I can do it too. Given the history I went with option b.

Take a look at the flop options here.

a. fold, no f*cking way I'm doing that
b. call, a viable option, but it is taking a big risk here if an ace, king or heart comes. Even a 7 or 8 would worry me on the turn. If I felt I could fold to those cards I would've considered this longer, but I can't.
c. re-min raise, this is actually an interesting option I thought about later. He'd only have $13 behind on the turn and getting the rest in would be a piece of cake. But again, we don't want to give him odds to draw out.
d. push, Probably the best option. We are losing to a few hands in his range, but I'd put him on another PP or maybe AK or AJ?

So I'm actually on a bit of a downswing, since I had my first two set over set hands happen within 5-600 hands, so of course I got stacked there. I'm still going strong, should be reaching 10K hands at 50NL within a week or so, depending how much I play.

Mike Matusow - "They asked me who would you want to be locked on a desert island with? And I said Daniel Negreanu 'cause we'd have a lot of fun"
Antonio Esfandiari - "Wow, do you know how gay that sounds?"
