More Mistakes to Learn From

Permanent Linkby xDiamond_CutteRx on Sat Aug 09, 2008 9:21 pm GMT

PLO is definitely swingy. Two days ago, I lost and won back 2.5 BI, and the last two days I'm down another 1.5 BI. Hardly anything to worry about, but there was definite bad play on my part that cost me; in fact, it might have cost me this entire amount. So, true to my new self, rather than fester over it, I'm going to record these mistakes and try and learn from them, so I don't repeat them.

1. Play in position, and don't reraise out of position. I know some guys say you should be reraising AAxx as long as you have at least a suit or some other decent combo because you have an equity edge, but I really disagree. For me to consider reraising OOP, I'd want a really strong hand that has 5-6 nut hand combos, not just 2-3. And even then, in my experience, it's almost never necessary to 3-bet preflop when people are only playing 100 BB stacks. For one thing, you have so much more deception when you flop a set of Aces, and for another, you aren't put in awkward positions when you miss as often. A hand like AA72 rainbow may be a favorite over KQJT, but it plays so much worse after the flop that adding positional disadvantage sets you up to lose big.

2. Don't get crazy about a hand like top pair + second nut flush draw. This isn't Hold'em, and a lot of combos have you crushed.

3. When an opponent bets hard the whole way and then pots the river, he usually has the nuts. You don't need to make as many crying calls as you think, especially not with hands like two pair or trips (not sets). Swallow your pride and fold when you know you're beat.

4. You probably need to steal less and c-bet less. It may have worked at 25PLO, but its effectiveness has been cut at 50PLO, and will probably diminish as you move up. Start being more methodical about these moves and less robotic.

OK, back to winning! Got my $240 bonus, and I have another $50 bonus on the way, so I'm still making profit. Also in the middle of reading Daniel's book which I got today. Hopefully will be worth the wait/hype.

I saw. I conquered. I came.
