Casino stakes - How much money should I bring

Postby KerManCol » Sun Mar 02, 2008 5:28 pm GMT

I'm a casual poker player for about 3 years (playing online and playing tourneys with a group of friends) and I'm thinking going to a casino to improve my skills. The thing is I have no idea how Casino Hold 'em works (stakes?, pot limit or no limit?, % of the pot taken by the casino, if any?, value of the chips?). I want to know if the values of the chips differ or are the same in all casinos.

Also I want to know how much money should I bring to a low stakes table (and again I want to know the lowest stakes tables that most casinos have).

Thanks in advance!

General rules of thumb:
  • Ask the casino what games they offer (type, blinds and max buy-in), unless you get lucky and someone here knows the casino you’re planning to visit it’s unlikely anyone of us can answer this question.
  • Take as much money as you’re willing to lose.
  • Ask if it’s self dealt. This can be intimidating .

Almost every casino will have 3/6 fix limit hold'em and 1/2 no limit hold w/200max buyin. Some will also have 2/4 limit. Could also run into spread limit but not usually much pot limit.

Casino's take a rake equal to 10% of the pot and it is usually capped at between 3 and 5 dollars per pot. There may also be a jackpot rake of $1 or 2 dollars per pot.(Any place with a total rake over $5 is a rip off IMO)

My suggestion is for fixed limit buy in for 50 big bets. so if it's 2/4 buy in for a 100. No limit I'd buy in for the max.

Chip values can be different at each casino but at most low limit games you will see white chips worth $1, red worth $5, and green worth $25

Good point, don't know. Please note my post only applies to U.S. casinos.

Actually I'm in Puerto Rico so yes I think the difference may not be that much of casinos in the U.S.

I have another very basic question, where do I change my money to play, in the cashier or in the table itself? I'm asking that because I don't think I have to walk all the way from the cashier to the table with all those chips and I don't want to look ridiculous asking that either .

Please don't laugh at me for that question! LOL

Most casino's are either/or, meaning you can buy at cashier or when you get a seat.

Casinos can be intimidating places. If you’re too embarrassed to ask just try to learn as much as you can from watching. E.g. you’ll see if other players turn up with chips or buy them from the dealer.

I wouldn’t take anything for granted from one country to another.

If anyone asked me how you buy a drink in a bar I’d say:
[i]“You ask the barman, he gives it to you, you pay himâ€

Yeah you should, San Juan has a lot of great places to see and beautiful beaches, not to mention the women  .

Thanks for all your help I really appreciate it.
