Chip Amount Question :: I'm getting a LOT of chips.

Postby supa-t » Thu Mar 18, 2004 5:57 am GMT

I've worked out a deal and I'm getting 4,000 custom chips from a manufacturer. My main concern is flexibility. I want to be able to use the chips for my standard low limit poker nights, as well as hosting large WPT style tourneys, and maybe the occasional home casino night.

I'm needing some help breaking out the denominations, so far I've got:

$1, $2.50, $5, $25, $100, $1000

Think i should add $500, and $5000 and distribute amounts evenly at 500? I know i will not use all chips in every setting, but I want have the chips to support all buy-in amounts. $2.50 is in there for blackjack and splitting 5's.

I've seen help with smaller chip sets but not of one this big.

Mindgame, I've seen you say you have a lot of chips in a post you made, how do your chip denominations break down, and what do you wish you had to make it better.

This is the one and only chip set I will ever buy, so I want to get it right the first time.

Thanks,

You should add a $500 chip and a $5000 chip. The number you are using sounds fine. You also can't split $1, so keep that in mind.

What kind of chips are you getting? I don't need to know the price.

I could help but personally I really dislike chips with denominations on them. It causes problems like this when you have to decide on the proper ratio to get for lots of different values of games.

If I was getting that many chips WITHOUT denominations I'd get 3-5 colors. The ratio would depend mostly on how many people I wanted to host and how often and by how much we would want to color-up chips in a larger tournament. My current 1000 chip set I have a 50/50/25 ratio per player and can thus host 8 players with 400/400/200 chips.

With 4,000 chips in a ratio of 100/50/50/25 (4 colors) or 50/50/50/25/25 (5 colors) per player you could host 20 players for any game you could imagine the way I see it. Of course this REALLY depends on how many players you want to be able to host and how much coloring-up you're going to be doing in full tournaments. This also only works with non-denominated chips because you'll be adjusting the values of the colors as needed for each individual game.

If I were getting a smaller set then I would definitely drop the values on the chips. But I"m getting Chipco style chips, and have an individual front and back design for each chip. I want it to feel as much like an authentic casino chip as possible so I'd really like to have a denomination on there.

I don't plan on hosting a 50 player tourney, so I think I'll have enough chips to have a few lower denominations, and also the higher amounts for tourney use.

I have dropped the 2.50 piece in exchange for a 50 cent. Think that makes much more sense.

Here's my snag. I'll play low limit hold'em the majority of the time. However, I don't anticipate needing that many chips to play ring games. I'll need the most chips when doing tourneys. I'd also like to host a few "casino nights".

This is more difficult than i had planned.

Well, to solve my problem, I've made an Excel sheet to determine tournament chip amounts, along with the total money pool. It's set up so that I can plug in the number of buyins, rebuys and add ons, and set the chip amounts during each of those.

It's helped me detemine what amounts of each chip denom to get.

.50 : 400
$1 : 620
$5 : 1000
$25 : 800
$100 : 750
$500 : 320
$1000 : 110

I can't think of any problems with the above structure. And according to my Excel sheet (if its all correct ;p ) I should be able to host a 50 player tourney with 50 rebuys and 50 add-ons. And thats even starting with T:2000 for a total possible tourney chip count at $300,000.

The Excel file was using the chip amounts above, and isn't too pretty, but if anyone would like a copy email me.

It would not only be useful for buying chips but also for simply setting up your tournament. Its a big help for figuring out which chip denominations you should dole out - especially in a larger tourney.

I make no promises, so feel free to double check my work.
