Most people who have any kind of education in Philosophy don't waste their time on the "big" questions because they're stupid.

and thats because most philosophy degrees teach a history of philosophy rather than independent inquiry. Its not because the questions are stupid, rather the mode of thinking in approaching the questions are.

Depends largely on the department. In the coastal regions of the US, there is a much lower emphasis on general history of Phil and more on Analytic Philosophy.
