The qualifier for low is a 9-low or better, instead of the usual 8-low or better. Means a lot more lows possible, and seems to induce more action.

Sorry for the mild hijack. This game should only be played in a social setting for non-serious money and with copious amounts of intoxicants.
We play "Lowmaha". In this variant, you're guaranteed a possible low; you stop the board as soon as that is true. Sometimes you're done on the flop, sometimes high cards and pairs come out and it keeps going (I think the record is either a 12 or 14 card board).
Naturally, since you're guaranteed a possible low, we move it down to 7 or better.
Back to your regular DC programming.

This sounds fun to try at the end of the night. You probably get quads+ like every 20 hands or so.

Not so much quads per se, but often you end up throwing away your flopped flush/top set/etc. I'd guess (with no statistics to back me up) that the majority of the time it plays out like O/8, sometimes a four or six card board. Just a normal distribution I guess.
Wait til I teach you Elvis. That's a game for very late at night only.

Re: DC's New Blog
Sorry I haven't been around much. For about a month I was prepping non-stop for lasertag Nationals and didn't do much else. Now I have school coming up, and aside from one very short stint in a home game, I have played zero Poker in last 4-5 weeks. There is a good chance I'll play the odd weekend here and there now. But to be honest, I don't have the bug right now. Don't know when/if I'll have it again, but it usually seems to strike after about this long.

Re: DC's New Blog
Played today because my fav cardroom got rid of jackpots (whew, no more stealing my drop) and is instead offering a FREE $50 add-on to people's initial buy-in as long as they play for at least two hours. Not only was it free money, but it was definitely loosening up the game.
Really only won one major hand. I had [Kc Jc], flopped [Qc 9d 4c], turned a club, and got all-in against a guy with [Tc 9c]. Go me. One other pot I took off a guy by reverse-floating AK. Not a move I usually make or like, but it was one of those "feel" things that his stack was just primed for. He mucked AK face up when I bet the river, so I of course showed mine. He busted a few minutes later. Maybe I should feel bad.
Anyway, nice little $256 score. Feels like a lot of money right now, because after a dry summer and paying student fees (haven't recouped a lot yet because paychecks won't start until October), I feel a little tapped. I guess I never realized how much Poker money was helping keep my finances afloat. Fridays don't look too busy for me this semester, so maybe that will be Poker day. Still don't see myself getting back online though, because that's far too distracting, and I do have some responsibilities (being a TA, tutoring, classes, editing work on the student journal, etc).

Re: DC's New Blog
Oh noes! I deposited online!
Would that all days could be like today, though. I played some $0.10/$0.25 PLO and was up a little over $80 in fairly short order, mostly by exploiting some horrible leaks in others' games. Glad to see that at least that game hasn't become a shark pond in my absence. Given that I have a fairly light workload (surprisingly) at the moment, I might be able to manage a few hours a week. Of course, this is predicated on the notion that I'll be able to manage my time well and keep a clear head. The last few months, it hasn't been a problem, so let's hope it continues.
Taking time off has been good for me, I guess. I think the best thing to do now is not to overextend myself and not play more than 1-2 days per week. Even a little extra cash would help me. Next weekend I'm the best man at a wedding, so that's probably out, but I'll keep you all up on my progress.
No lofty goals, no VIP status, no trying to build up to big games. Just trying to make a couple extra bucks. Because hey, with the job market like it is, I might have to fall back on this once again someday soon.

Re: DC's New Blog
Shipped off all winnings and then some in 5.5 BI downswing, FML.
Now I remember why I don't like playing online. No cool-off time. Time to withdraw soon as my deposit clears... well, that was fun for 5 days.

Re: DC's New Blog
Owing to the fact that I couldn't cash out until the deposit cleared, I of course kept playing, and I've run up the Stars roll about $300. Can't complain about that. Guess it's not so bad sometimes. I might need to cash out now to get some quick cash before the end of the month, but it's possible I might play a little more. I'm thinking, really... is this semester seriously that easy? Guess I got all of my difficult grad school classes out of the way last year.

Re: DC's New Blog
Updates: I cashed out $250 that I had on Stars so I could make sure I could pay off my credit card next month. Done and done. Still have almost $500 online at the moment, so it's been a pretty good month. I had a session of almost +4 buy-ins tonight before losing about half of it back. Eh, it happens, PLO swingaments.
Interesting facts:
I always 4-table when I play 25PLO and 50PLO, but here's the data:
1. In about 45,000 hands of 25PLO, I've made about $2100.
2. In about 44,000 hands of 50PLO, I've made about $1250.
What's more, my average hourly rate is more than 50% higher at 25PLO than at 50PLO. Granted, 45,000 hands isn't the largest sample, and only about half what some people consider significant, but I thought it was interesting the lower stakes game is more profitable for me. I didn't think it was that much easier, but maybe it is.

Re: DC's New Blog
Following a bad session (-4 buy-ins) yesterday, I made another cash out to make sure I protect my winnings (cashed out $262, leaving $200 on Stars). I already won some of it back today, but I think I'm in a place where I'd like to just milk the .10/.25 game for awhile before I even think about moving back up. I just can't afford a financial hit. That said, I still made about $600 for the month of October (almost 24 buy-ins, not bad). Combined with an $1100 financial aid check and about a $500 paycheck on the way, and I feel like I'm on top of the world right now... which shows you how poor I am.
Since the Turbo Takedown is back and I'm Silver for November, I think that might be a good thing to use my point on. I'm also in the market for a new sweater... hello PokerStars fleece. I have a few things to take care of in November (like a lecture I'm giving on Tuesday), but I only have one short paper left to go, and a 12ish page term paper that shouldn't be too much of a problem. A welcome change from previous semesters where I had like 40 pages of writing due in the last week of class.

Re: DC's New Blog
7 BI downswing + losing like every flip and 60/40 in my favor for two days (especially when I'm like 65% in a 3-way all-in) = me cash out from PokerStars. Two month run, about $400 profit. I'll take it. Now screw you PS doomswitch!

Re: DC's New Blog
On an unrelated note, why does Stars censor "stfu" and "gfys?" Seriously? Are people that sensitive we can't even abbreviate. I mean, you can still type in "fcuk you," and I'm pretty sure everyone knows what that means. Weird.
