Well that's a good question, and one that I've thought about. I'm working on a copyright, but this isn't something that I will sell thousands of, nor do I need any of these sales to lead a happy, comfortable life
To try and patent it would not be feasible as there's not really anything that I can patent. Steel disks are nothing new. The main reason that I don't think too many people will rush to recreate them is this -
First, they probably woulnd't make enough money on them to do it. I only make a few bucks per item, and I wouldn't be making a dime if I didn't have a close friend handling the labor. To cut each disk from a 2" bar of 303 Stainless Steel (which isn't cheap) takes just over 28 minutes per unit. Machine shop rates for EDM wire cutters (the only way to get the tolerance I'm happy with) are expensive. Take 60 buttons I just made by ~30 minutes per button, and you see that it takes 30 hours just to cut the raw disks. After that, each disk is put on a lathe by hand and beveled. From there we use a special powder to blast the finish so that it will be scratch resistant and have a nice contrast when we engrave. Then we clean the buttons and start the engraving process. If any of the buttons aren't perfect, we throw them in the trash. Another cleaning and drying and they're ready for you guys.
If I was to outsource this business to anyone else, from start to finish the buttons would cost me around $20-$25 each depending on quantity. Add to that shipping from my friend in IL to me in TX, the velour pouch, shipping boxes, labels, etc. and I would be losing around $3 per item - which is no way to run a business!
I want to make the product available to enthusiasts like us, but I feel that it's a labor of love, and love of the sport (I consider poker a sport before a hobby...) and I don't think there's enough margin in the sale of the buttons to make it worth anyone else's time. To do so would require them to charge $35-$40 which is not a reasonable cost in my opinion.
But I'd love for the folks on this board to pick one up so we can spread the word! I'm having a lot of fun with it and so far everyone's really enjoyed their buttons. There are about 35 in the mail right now that I'm hoping to hear about when they are delivered. If anyone wants one or has any questions, please let me know.
Take care,
Adam

got mine today. yay!
very kewl... i like it. i recommend to everyone... for sure.
i do have one suggestion... not to be taken negatively in any way... like i said, i'm pleased with the product... this is just a suggestion/question about a possible improvement...
could the engraving be made deeper into the metal?
anyway... awesome product regardless. really kewl buttons.
:D

Well this is the first request I've had for deeper engraving, but I'll take a look at it and see if it's something that would be a benefit. It would take a little longer to engrave each button.. but that's not a big deal. We'll do one that way and see how it looks.
Glad you got the button and are otherwise pleased with it!
Take care,
Adam
