drawing hands in multiway pots
Why is playing draw hands such as 10-9 or 9-8 suited a profitable decision in multiway pots?

Re: drawing hands in multiway pots
Suited connectors play well in multi way pots because they can hit flushes and str8’s. Flushes and str8’s usually win so the probability of wining does not decrease much if you are playing vs. a lot of players.
This is how I calculate the odds for suited and unsuited connector’s gapers double gapers vs. multiple players.
1) I add 12% chance to win for having any 2 cards. This accounts for the changes of say 72 hitting 77x flop.
2) I add 4.5% for flush value. The chances of 2 suited pocket cards hitting a flush by the river is more like 6.5% but to account for higher flushes and full houses you have to decrease this by 2%.
3) Str8’s are more complicated. You have to account for the # of ways you can hit a str8.
For Example:
T,9 can make a Str8 by hitting (KQJ, QJ8, J87, or 876). (4 three card combinations)
AK can make a str8 by hitting only (QJT) (1 three card combinations)
T8 can make a str8 by hitting (QJ9, J97, or 976) (3 three card combinations)
KQ can make a str8 by hitting (AJ10, J109) (2 three card combinations)
I add 1.5% for each combination.
4) So for example:
• AA vs. 87s would have (12% + 4.5% + (1.5% times 4 combinations)=22.5% using a poker calculator this calculation is 22.11%
• AA vs. 86s would have (12%+4.5%+(1.5 *3)) = 21% - Poker calculator is 21.10%
• AA vs. 86o would have (12%+0%+(1.5*3))=16.5% - Poker calculator is 17.19%
5) 87’s vs. more than one player for example AA KK & QQ. The odds to win do not change much decreasing less than 1%.
If you run other situations using my math and a poker calculator you will arrive at close to the same conclusion.
