dumb mIRC question
so im trying to get mIRC to work on the new comp for thp chat purposes, trying to log on to random quakenet server and i continually get the error message of:
Connect retry #75 de.quakenet.org (6668)
Unable to connect to server (Software caused connection abort)
mIRC tries to help me by giving me two options
a. the server you're connecting to doesn't work
b. invalid port number
any ideas? i do have a firewall up, but mIRC is an exception (unblocked it when the program first ran)

Type in /server irc.quakenet.org:#thp should take you straight to the channel. If I got it wrong then just type /server irc.quakenet.org then when it loads up /j #thp
If all that still doesn't work then try /server irc.quakenet.org:8080 it might be the port that is blocked.

I think the IRC default port is 6667 (it'd range is 6660-6669).
Port 8080 is usually what Apache put's itself on when it's installed onto a machine where 80 is already taken (usually by IIS). In other words it's for servicing HTTP requests so I'm not sure what it has to do with IRC.

I downloaded mIrc
If you do a bit of Googling you should be able to find some pretty comprehensive tutorials I'd hope.

Bare bones:
when you download it, the first window after installation should be one that asks for your name, your email, nickname and server information.
For your name and email, put anything you want. Your nickname is what name will show up during chat (anything you want, easily changeable).
For server information.. it prolly says "random XXXXX server". Click on the button and there should be a list of different servers to automatically join. Switch it to "connect to random Quakenet server". (This is the network of chatrooms that THP uses).
When it's set to connect to a quakenet server and all the other info is typed in, press connect.
It should pop up a window and start connecting, and when it successfully does it will pop up a window for you to type stuff into, and a "popular channels" list. In the channels list, type "#thp", or in the other prompted window type "/join #thp". Either one should work.

f*ck knows, all I know is that the University firewall blocked all the 6* ports but 8080 worked.

Most universities, hotels and companies do. Usually because the system administrators are trying to prevent miss use. E.g. people playing Counter Strike or downloading things via P2P.
At home you are the administrator so all outgoing ports are accessible. The only ports you need to manual open in your firewall are incoming. E.g. You don’t need to open port 80 to view web pages, but if your home PC was a web server hosting pages you would because people would be trying to come in through port 80.
Most home firewalls are configure to act just like a value.
