HELP - what are the rules on this one???

Postby sjpokerjunkie » Mon May 19, 2008 9:34 pm GMT

I was playing with some friends in a no-limit tournament, when the following scenario occured ...it is killing me to know the "official" rules on this and where I can to go read up.

I got pocket queens and raise pre-flop, I am the last better in the round and keep calling the only one player in the hand with me. - The flop was J,4,8 the other player bets, and I call.

The turn card is another Queen - giving me trips. He bets 500 and I raise 1K the dealer says ok lets see... so, in a crappy mistake I flip my cards... and so does the other player... He yells two pairs (J,8) then someone informs him I have Trips.

At this point the dealer turns the next card. Another player asked why we turned our cards over early if there was still another card left and when the other player noticed i had him beat, announces it is a "Chopped Pot" stating that since I turned my cards its voided out, and proceeds to give everyone their money back as if the hand never happened.

Is this real? or did I just cheated myself out of one more round of betting but win what was already in the pot?

We BOTH turned our cards over pre-maturely, but I was the obvious winner. I have looked on the internet, ant the only thing it says under WSOP rules is that: " if any player exposes his or her cards during play a penalty MAY be imposed but the person does not have his or her cards "Killed" - - -what does that mean?

It entirely depends on the tournament.

Some tourneys like the WSOP have allowed showing 1 or both cards at different points in their history.

WPT tournaments often don't allow ANY revealing of hand information, including showing. This has been enforced as the hand immediately being rendered dead, and even orbital penalties (having to sit out X amount of hands before allowed to play again). This was funny when I saw the fight it caused in one of my WPT sats.

It means the person who is in "charge" of the tourney can give either one of you a penalty, which is normally forcing you to sit away from the table for X minutes. You continue to get blinded as normal but cannot play your hand.

IMO, since you both turned over you cards the hand should continue, you should be given a warning and the next time you do it, you sit for 10 minutes while getting blinded.

The rules are gonna vary I think from place to place, some places (including the league I am in) turning your hand over early is considered a muck.
