How never to act when it's not your game.

Postby K-rug » Thu Aug 18, 2005 12:13 am GMT

Here's a story that will live on in our group for the ages:

Tonight we have 14 people over for some NL Texas Hold'em. Just your friendly .50/1 blind game. About an hour into it I hear a commotion in the other room and people yelling for me to come in and clarify a rule.

Seems as though someone has gone all-in and it folded around to the person last to act. The person last to act without calling flipped his cards over and said, "Can you beat that?" He had pocket sevens. The guy goes ape shit. Yelling and swearing and going totally nuts. I make the ruling that if it is heads-up with only two people left in the hand and the last person to act does it, it is legal. I won't debate ethics or anything else. But it's legal as it doesn't change anything.

Well it doesn't change anything with the way the person who went all-in plays. He's all-in after all. He tries to challenge me and is going totally crazy. We tell him to calm down and sit down. So buy his actions the other guy calls. I tell the dealer to roll it out and for the one guy to flip over his cards. He had pocket sixes.

Nothing comes on the board. Pocket sevens holds up and the guy goes berserk. He takes his chips and throws them everywhere. Makes a move for the guy who called and the guy who called throws some punches that connect with the other guys face. I grab the guy who threw his chips all over and started the mess and put him in a headlock and my brother grabs him and pushes him out the door and I yell, "You're banned! Don't ever come back!" I would love to see his face now as I think a couple of good ones connected.

So what should you learn from this:
The house makes the rules
Don't argue with the house
Don't throw your chips around the room after losing
Don't try to go for someone bigger than you
Don't piss off the house when the guys running it are bigger than you

The guy who started the mess has been playing with us for almost three years too. It's a shame.

Was he drunk or something?

I know it’s kind of a BS pantomime but that’s part of the magic of real world play :) if he doesn’t like it he can just play on-line.

just a friendly game? lol sounds like you need to keep a basball bat to hand, glad to hear you threw him out I would of but it's a shame people can get so worked up about money. I think I would of ruled the hand the same but I would say to the person who flipped over the cards that it is highly unethical and by flipping them you pretty much should call whatever.

I mean pocket sixes anyway all in that's a pretty dum move to go all-in anyway.

No he wasn't drunk.
There was maybe $20 in the pot.
Yes he went all-in pre in early position. Not a bad move unless someone has a higher pocket pair. Otherwise you're looking at maybe a coin flip.

Hi Geno’s running gag welcome to the THP forum I’ve gathered you’re going to be with us for some time.

Let me introduce Scott attacking someone for making a play money post and Snoogins excessively long reply I’m sure you’ll all be seeing a lot of each other.

Our bar opens at six.

I have seen it on the WPT people last to act and flipping up their cards and calling. It would appear to me that there was more to it than that to piss the guy off.
If its anything like some of the games I have played someone is under someones skin way before they get busted like that but its just the icing on the cake.
But if he is right or not by throwing his chips then swinging on someone he got what he deserved by getting tossed and losing then.
My 1st rule at my house is check the attitudes at the door or go home.

Pat-he flipped up his cards BEFORE calling. In any tournament (like WPT) any exposed hand or if you verbally reveal what you might have, then hand is dead. This is also the "technical" rule for casino cash games.

I can see the argument being made that showing cards BEFORE calling should be illegal (don't know if its in any official rule book). The point is to show someone your cards and then seeing their reaction before acting (if they look scared, call, if they look calm, fold). This is the same reason that string betting (saying call and then raise) is illegal because it allows you to get a reaction before making the move.

That being said, the guy was clearly out of line, and as it was your game, you get the final say.

I've heard of players "throwing chips around" but I never took it literally. I usually "throw my chips around", then lose, I never even considered doing it in the opposite order.

This from the 2004 WSOP:
A player who exposes his cards during the play may incur a penalty, but will not have his hand killed.

I haven't found any official rules for the WPT yet, but I know I heard Mike Sexton say if a player shows his hand before making a verbal declaration, his hand would be dead.
