I do. I've honestly been thinking about having some of "the talk" with him here pretty soon. Not necessarily all of the messy details, but maybe a precursor...a rough outline if you will. I would much rather him hear it from me instead of some kid named Jeb on the school-bus.

We talk w/ our kids about it all the time. But at a pace and content that we think they need to know to be informed and to protect themselves.
My 8 year old knows where babys come from and how they get out of the mom and that it takes mom and dad using their junk to make the a baby.
My 5 year old knows where it is ok for family to touch him and where a stranger should absolutely not touch him. Somehow, he is not learning why it is not ok to hit me in the nuts when we are ultimate fighting.

Dave, THIS is sex education. Extrapolate what content and at what pace you believe your kids should learn about this at age 10, 12, 14, etc., and that's all anyone advocating sex education is talking about. Not just teaching young kids how to put on condoms to try to avoid getting pregnant.

No, I don't have any children.Dave B wrote:Do you have a 6 year old?
This is exactly my point. Your children are being taught sexual education relevant to their age.Dave B wrote:We talk w/ our kids about it all the time. But at a pace and content that we think they need to know to be informed and to protect themselves.

The point is, kids are all different and ready for things at different ages. My daughter has always been much more mature for her age than my son (sometimes I forget how young she really is).
I get a bit scared when I think of schools teaching certain things to an entire class to fulfill a mandated requirement that might not be appropriate for all kids.
Also, IMO, any decisions should be done at on a local level. A farm kid who grows up around the circle of life needs much different info at different ages than an urban child.
Let the individual school boards decide when and what to teach children, not the govt.

Sure...how much power the state should have is usually a legitimate question, but I think even you have to realize that is a fairly advanced political discussion - this debate is rarely about state mandates, it is usually about moralistic views on sex ed.

I can agree with this. I've always believed that the national government should set goals and provide funding, not micro manage. States can flesh out some of the details and localities can fill in the fine print to make it fit their needs specifically. IMO, this is a pretty good blueprint for most things.
