I guess that's why I always come in second. I refuse to play in hands like that. All the smart players folded.

I love to play in games where people "Never get dealt anything ... so they gotta make a play".

When I never get dealt anything I consider it a masterful win if I escape with only paying the antes.

no, i usually just re-raise :D

villain has seen me play a lot, and i've taken this line with AA or KK in the hole, so thats what i was going for

at the time i had been getting cold cards, so i picked a nice spot to make a play, since i knew villains hand was going to be weak

id never make this call/play against a calling station ... 8JK rainbow is pretty useless minus the two overcards

But Salche when you made the call in the first place were you anticipating the villain to raise behind you? It just seems like a weak call to make on 3rd street.

I usually dont raise with big pairs in the hole on 3rd, unless I can re-raise. Reason being, a good stud player sees somebody raising with a 5 up and gets confused and scared and at best will check/call to the river, but usually will fold.

Also more people are likely to call you because they think their pair is bigger than you're upcard, so theres no way you're winning ... this has a domino effect of a pot becoming multiway, which is what you DONT want to happen with a big pair in the hole.

My play here is something I have done before, and I knew the villain well (literally play everyday with her), so I knew

a. I can get a river fold for sure if she doesn't improve
b. If I get a noticeable pair on the board, she is likely to fold
c. Even if she doesn't fold, I can catch something to make a better hand (which I actually did here).

This hand became blind aggression after a while, and I knew if I was raised on the river, or if another 10 hit, I'd have to get out fast.

Salche man,

I'm not knocking you but I;m not sure you understood what I was getting at. Is J K 8 a usual call for you from the beginning of the hand or were you planning to represent a big pair every step of the way. From what I read, I got the impression you decided to represent after you saw BikerGirl raise behind you, which makes me question the 3rd street call in the first place.

Lets say next hand at the same table you are first to act with K J 8, do you call or do you fold that hand and why?


I'm discussing more general 3rd street play here I guess. Did that make any sense at all?

No I would not usually play 8JK ... I get a little impatient sometimes.

Ideally with 6 - 8 players at the table I try to see 4th street maybe 25% of the time. On nights like these, when I'm getting a string of really crappy cards, I'm closer to 15%. If I haven't played a hand in a long time I'll play something like this literally to get lucky.

Here's why I feel like I can justify getting lucky here.
a. If I can get two cards from the top half of the deck, I've either got a draw or a pair
b. If I can pair my door card I can probably get people to fold

If I feel like I'm getting good enough cards, I throw away hands like these without thinking much.

Thats exactly what I was looking for. Because I would normally throw that hand away without thinking twice. However, I see when you have two overcards to the other door cards it might be worth a visit to fourth. Thanks.
