OK need to see if I played this correctly or not.

I'm at a UB .25/.50 NL Hold'em Table (for only about 10 min so far) killing time B4 a 1 AM (EST) 7 Sultans tourney.

I get JQs, I pay BB. only 4 others stay in includng BB and SB, and I'm in 4th position now. Flop comes up 8,9,10 rainbow (I'm thrilled). First position bets $1, 2nd & 3rd call, I raise to $2 (wanting to build the pot a lil bit w/o driving out all players/payers), 5th position folds & others call. Turn comes up J. Position 1 bets $2, pos 2 & 3 fold. I raise matching pot (like $8.50) thinking maybe he has a 7 or maybe high pair or maybe 2 pair. He calls the raise. River comes up Q. Position 1 goes all in (like $19). I curse, cuz I think he must have a K at least or maybe KA. I fold and say crap.

I feel OK about the fold at the riv, but...
Was I too greedy in trying to get a few more $'s in the pot at the expense of giving cheap cards and getting burned by them, or was it just bad luck with turn/riv cards?

side note:
The 7 Sultan's tourney was kinda cool. A $3000 free roll with #1 getting $300 or $400 (I forget) and payout up to spot #260 ($4). It was offered to anyone who played enough raked hands w/in 24 hrs (i forget the exact #, like 100-200 hands i think).
Been playing with the free original $15 they gave me for a few days now and got a few more $ out of the tourney. Free $ are my favorite kind.

When I flop a straight just like you did, I jam the pot as much as I can. Straights are too easily counterfeited. Just one card (in this case a J or Q) falls and you no longer have the nuts. You can lose to a higher straight or have to split with anyone who has the one card to the straight.

People are sitting around with draws, and draws that match or beat your straight (higher straight draw, flush draw, set to full house/quads, two pair to full house). Always make people dearly for draws. If they call trying to make a hand, they are making a mistake, even if they get lucky and hit. 'Cause in the long run you'll make money like this.

Yes, turn and river were bad luck, but it was bad luck that was allowed to happen by not driving everyone out of the pot by not betting strongly enough after the flop.

Yep you need to make a much bigger flop raise.

I figured that's what I would hear.
I thought I was just greedy for a larger pot on that hand. I gambled & lost instead of playing smart for a smaller pot.

Thanks for nailing the point home on this one.
