It’s tough mate
I’ve missed two redundancy bullets myslef in the past and now that I’m contracting I’m not looking forward to next year when I have to start looking for replacement work during a recession.
Hope you find something that’s even better, you never know it could turn out to be a positive thing.

Good luck Golddog. It is often the case that a shock to the system like this turns into something even better.
I often wonder why I sit at my lower pay govt agy job. Times like this, that security is nice.

Thanks for all the kind words. I was working at a small software consulting firm, and with the tight economy, other companies don't want to spend omney on external consultants, so we didn't have enough work.
At least that's what I got out of our meeting. I think I know the folks there well enough to know they were being sincere. Laid off 6 of ~45 employees, so a pretty fair chunk.
I'm pretty fortunate in that I have enough cash saved up to last quite a while, my only debts are my mortgage and a small home equity line, and I don't have to support anyone but myself. So, I can just live quietly for some time until something comes up.
Felting, sorry to hear about your state. I sure hope it picks up for you.
Diamond, I'd specifically avoided poker this week, thinking I'd be too likely to push for when something isn't there. But, I played a SNG last night just to kill an hour, and (mostly) was able to play pretty well, getting into second place.

Oh yeah, I should've mentioned...it just got better and better last week.
Monday night, I drank quite a bit, so just took it easy and painted my BR. Went to bed early, and at 11:43 PM had multiple smoke alarms going off.
Went around the house, saw no evidence of problems, but figured I'd better call the FD to be sure.
When the guys came out, they explained to me that the alarms are wired in series, so if one goes off, it sets the rest of the series off. Makes sense, if one's going off in the basement, you want people upstairs to know. Sometimes it's one going bad, sometimes it might have dust or something in there.
So, they did a double-check, and took down the alarms until they quit going off. The next day, I vacuumed them out per the FD's suggestion, re-mounted and tested them, it's all good.
Wednesday and Thurday were pretty good. A friend of mine has been bulding applications in this newish framework of Ruby on Rails. I asked Tom if there was something I could do to help, since I have free time. He was nice enough to give me a small project so I could learn about this stuff.
So, I was keeping busy with that, and then Friday night, suffered an attack on my laptop. I thought I had it well-secured behind a firewall on my router and with anti-virus protection, but I guess not.
Seems like there was something else, but I can't remember it now. Anyway, it was a pretty shitty week.
On the plus side, December is starting out sunny and mid-50s.

I was drinking my coffee this morning when my mate who sits behind me got a call from his wife. It was their first day back since they returned from holiday and when she got in she was told they’d made her redundant
Evidently people are buying less coffee too because Costa has lowered their prices.

Sorry to hear about your job.
I know the feeling. Work has been very slow for me as well, and since I make my money off of tips, that means very little money being brought in. Everyone seems timid & edgy at work, since there have been a ton of firings and layoffs recently due to our economy. It just seems that tourists aren't coming to Vegas for $1000 gambling weekends anymore, which means I'm lucky if I can work 2 full days/week.
I hope things turn around soon, for both of our sakes.
I personally think you're being wise to not play a lot of poker. Save what money you have now until you find another job. Good luck.
