Late in tourney

Postby SDPokerDude » Fri Mar 11, 2011 1:01 am GMT

This is a league tourney, I am already in points. We are currently at final 10 (2 tables of 5) and top 4 pays. Blinds are 1.5K/3K 100a.

Hero BB (approx 25K)
UTG (approx 10K) - all in
UTG+1 fold
Button (approx 40K) - all in
sb fold
I look down to JJ

The UTG is on a steal or has a big hand and the big stack is isolating with a good to great hand. Your stack leaves you with 8 big blinds, not great but enough to see you through for 1 or 2 more rounds to find another hand if you fold. We are most likely in good shape against either one over or a smaller pair or we are a slight favorite in a race against 2 overs against the bigger stack. Less likely, but still very possibly we are crushed by AA-QQ by the bigger stack. If we lose to the short stack but win against the big stack our stack increases. Another consideration is the gap concept, have you seen the bigger stack tighten up to a raise before now?

Late in tourney's, fold equity combined with the fact that when we do get called we are often a small to large favorite to win at show down make Jacks an easy shove when we are first in the pot. In this spot however I fold unless I have some sort of read on the big stack that opens his range in this situation.

The big stack is a decent, tight player. I struggled with this one for about 2 mins, but finally decided to lay it down. Small stack turned over J10s and big stack turned over AA.

One of my better folds...

Are you sure you're separating your play from your results?

In other words, are you making the right play at the time given the other players' range of hands, not what they actually turned over?

Be careful not to be results-oriented.

OK, 5-handed with JJ is a strong hand, THAT was what was so hard about the lay-down.

But read it this way instead...

9 players, first 4 muck. JJ still lays down in that situation with 2 all-ins in front. Ultimately, I think the time it took me to lay it down was just me coming to terms with a lost strong hand. Not me deciding what to do.

Doesn't quite apply 10bb deep. Unless I could see his cards im not seeing a reason to fold here ever

This play is really going to vary depending on the style of play at the table. If I know that big stack is a LAG, he could be isolating with any Ax or paint, I would more than likely call. If he is a TAG, then I would give him the benefit of the doubt and, though it would be very tough for me, I would lay this down. Basically, unless I had mad respect for big stack and knew that he/she wouldn't push over the top without a premium hand, I'm not folding my boys 5-handed.
