strongly considering this but I don't think it'll work bacause I'm a Canadian citizen and to my understanding the US doesn't just give out work visa's to people who don't have a tranferable skill.
Although I should look into maybe getting a student visa those are 2years aren't they?
Not sure on the student visa but here's a thought. How much money and effort does it take to obtain a CDL(comercial Driver's Licence) in canada? Most industry experts are predicting a driver shortage by the end of the year in the USA. Get a CDL, apply for a work visa, move to Vegas, once there you won't have to drive a truck if you don't want to.

Re: Life dilemma
by truck i'm assuming you're talking about a tractor trailer (big rig)?
for that there's a lot of testing a like a 6 week course you need to take to get a liscence (obviously considering the damage a poorly driven truck like that could do)
other than that you don't need a special liscence to say work for UPS or those delivery trucks. I've already done that so I guess I'd be able to site previous work experience.

CDL's also cover buses(think transit bus, that have a lot of those in vegas). Also, the endorsement for buses is one of the ways to qualify to be a taxi driver(every aspiring poker player's fall back job in the city of lost wages). Best part of having a CDL is they are transferable between states/provinces due to cvsa. Usually you just have to retake the written test. BTW, judging by some of the troglodytes driving truck in the USA, the tests aren't that hard.
Just some food for thought.

Wow, hard times all the way around. I'm also losing my job and with all liklihood a 20-year career. I also wondered about the ability to make a living at poker now that I'll have more time on my hands. The trouble is that I suck at poker. Fortunately I do have other skills.
+1 to what Phil said. In fact usually +1 to what Phil says.
Couple of comments. On your daily schedule you may need to factor in what you will do if you are at a table that is too good to leave when your scheduled breaks crop up. With as many tables as you are planning to play it is pretty reasonable to expect that one or more will always be pretty loose and worth playing.
I thought that NAFTA made cross-border employment easier. I know that you still have to have a job waiting but I thought that the paperwork was pretty easy.
I just got hired on by my University to teach one more year for the students who were in the pipeline when they cut our program. I've also got a pretty good consulting project doing database design and the client just asked me to say on and honcho redesigning their web applications. Benefits can shift to my wife's job so I'm covered there. I may try to see what I can do with some larger MTTs now that I'll have some time on my hands.

Ug, that's bad news Larry. I figured working at a university was about as safe as it gets.

Not too many things are that safe any more. I thought I was in good shape but a $77 million budget reduction to the University just meant that something had to give. My department (and 4 others) were unlucky.
We've got money in the bank, a year to look for a job, and marketable skills so we'll be OK.
In addition to Ensano in the OP there was at least one other in just this thread that had a life change. When I was in Iraq I saw or talked to SOOOO many people who lived through such horrible things that this seems like a little bump in the road.
(Apologies to Ensano for a minor thread hijack.)
