i quite like maddox's take on it.
We know they had some prior knowledge as there are recorded CIA documents with intelligence literally as specific as "osama bin laden plans to attack American soil through the use of hijacked aircraft" however im also sure they get thousands of such bits of information and deal with them accordingly based on risk appraisals. Im not so sure its quite a white wash as the say it is. However, im sure Bush had nothing to do with it. He's too f*cking stupid. Inless its one of the greatest pieces of performance misdirection ever and he's and evil genius...god help us.
GW bush is a coke snorting, party animal, trust fund kid...
he doesn't have the connections or the brains to ever pull anything that elaborate or even close to it...
his father on the other hand...

Spoken like a true coke snorting party animal...
In all seriousness if Bush wanted this done he wouldn't think up the plan himself. No president would. Theyt aren't up there doing anything alone. They have aids and advisors to plan the dirty stuff.

They had intelligence that suggested the attacks in each case were a possibility, with varying levels of confidence in each. I don’t believe they intentionally let them happen.
Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.

Quote from The Project for a new American Century
"To enact this vision we need a defining moment, such as when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor."
They may not have LET it happen, but they sure WANTED it to happen.

The mininal size of the US military between the WW1 and WW2 doesn't really give us an image of a nation whose leaders were eager to enter war.

Nor would the size of the military when we went into Iraq for that matter. The thing that differs from WW1 and WW2 is the technology of our weapons. We need less man power to inflict the same amount of damage.
Back to the original idea of this thread though. Yes I do beleive we had knowledge that "something" was going to happen. Exactly what or when we did not know. I also think Bush and his advisors "wanted" something to happen. The stupid thing is to blame Iraq for involvement in this when we knew the cheif people behind 9/11 was AlQueda.
The "bad intellegence" provided I feel was a ploy to get troops on the ground in Iraq. Bush wanted Iraq for more then just Saddam. I feel he wanted it for oil and to allow his friends and associates the chance to make billions of dollars providing goods and services to our troops. It goes further with the rebuilding efforts too. Many of those contracts were awarded to Bush buddies.
All along we should have been chasing the Taliban and Bin Laden. Screw Iraq and let that little Saddam keep that sand pit.
Bush and his cronies wanted 9/11 but they sure as hell didn't carry it out.

No one blamed Iraq or their government for 9/11.
9/11 Terroism = Afghanistan
WMD = Iraq
There was a little verbal slight of hand and things were implied and geography help out a little. But the two weren’t linked.

Apparently you missed the "you can't distinguish between Saddam and al Qaeda" speeches. Or Dick Cheney lying to Dick Armey about Saddam having personal links to bin Laden.

Only in the minds of a gullible public that didn't want to be confused with "facts" when there were terrorists that needed killing.
