Musing gently and wondering why...
...most of us use a $1000 chip.
Here's my thinking: typically chip denominations go up by 4x or 5x of the next denom. lower. So why do we go from $500 to $1000? Shouldn't denominations go:
$.05
$.25
$1
$5
$25
$100
$500
$2,500 (or $2000)
$10,000
$50,000
...etc? I get the simplicity of a $1,000, the idea of color-up, the idea of using a new base-10, but i've also got an infectious thought with the above chain of denominations.

Yes, you are fully correct, logically. But It's hard for some people to do math with 2,500 as a base. I know, 25 is a the same base, but it's really hard to think that way.
Plus, not casinos I know of use $2,500 chips.

In the casino world $1K is not the continuation of the series most of use refer to for home use, it's the base chip for a new series ($1K, $5K, etc).

That was my thought. A new base for a completely different level of gaming. Now if I can only figure out why Teddy KGB preferred regular Oreos over the double-stuff.

Sounds about right for the line dividing the hoi polloi from the real high rollers, i.e. the folks for which $1000 is the same as $1 is to an average person.MeridianFC wrote:In the casino world $1K is not the continuation of the series most of use refer to for home use, it's the base chip for a new series ($1K, $5K, etc).
