Need better understanding of calculating odds to improve

I've been playing for about a year now and I've had some success (even won a freeroll with 600 people in it but calculating odds is not my strong suit and I know I need a better understanding..

Pot Odds

Card Odds = 1:(Outs/Cards)

Pot Odds = Pot/Bet

Example

Straight

Hand 78

6 9 2 A

8 Outs - 46 cards left (52-2-3-1=46)

1:(46 / "8") = 1:5.75 to hit straight

Pot = $100
Bet = $20

1:(20 / 100) = 1:5 = 5% chance to make money

= fold since 1:5.75 < 1:5

Do I just know enough to be dangerous or am I close? lol

I think I get it now. I made an excel spreadsheet to figure it out..

The formula for counting card odds is ((50-B2)-B1)/B1)

B2 = Cards on Table
B1= Outs

So it is bad cards/good cards

Pot is easy Pot/Bet

When Pot comes out higher stay in

We have plenty of pages that talk about calculating odds, as well as some calculators...

in your example tho....using our pot odds calculator you can see that you have a little better than about 1 in 6 odds to hit a straight and the pot only needs to be 77.50 in order for call to make sense.....you have to remember that you can win the bet and your call back....so essentially the pot size is 140 in your case if you were to call...thats assuming you meant that the pot is 100, and yer facing an incoming bet of 20....basically just remember that a flush draw is 1 in 5 and a straight draw is 1 in 6.....if you have only one card to see.....if you've got 2 cards to see then its more like 1 in 3 in either case.....but remember, if they could bet again before you get to see that last card, so keep your implied odds in mind....so compare the pot, the incoming bet and your call....all of that compared to your call....1 in 5 (your call) in (call + bet+ pot)....if the proportion in chips is 1 in 6 or 1 in 7 or higher then, yer good for a call (or raise)
