NL cash games, how do I know when to move up to next limit?

Postby Mahdrek » Sun Mar 11, 2007 10:44 pm GMT

with limit i read its good to earn 100 big bets before moving up to next limit, is there any guidelines for NL , i play at .25nl right now as i'm still learning. also I'm sure the size of your bankroll would matter more too, but at the moment i play shortstack strategy.

thanx for any help, sorry if this has been talked about a lot , i did a search and didnt find the answer

You need at least 20 X buyins to move up a level. Also, you need to be able to crush the current level you are playing in. No point moving up if you break even or lose, since things are just going to get worse.

SS strategy is ok if you have to. But usually, if you think you are better then most players you will make more money with max buyin. Also, you will learn more poker playing with a full buyin. If you are just learning, I suggest dropping down a level and buy for the max.

ok I'm a little confused
for 20x buy-in do u mean:
ex: .50-$1.00 blinds
min buy-in is $10
max buy-in is $100

so in this example would u mean move up when at least $200 or $2000 ?

thanx for replies

kk... I've done what you want to do so here's my advise...

you play 25$NL (blinds .15/.25) you should have 500$US in your BR

my suggestion is play that game until you have at least 1000$ in your BR (that would be 40x buy in at your current lvl but only 20xbuyin at the next lvl)

once you do that then move up to the 50$NL (.25/.50)...
if you get down to 10x buy in (500$) drop back down BUT if you move up to 2000$ then move up...

my personal rule of thumb (always talking max buy ins)

if you have 20x the buy in play at that lvl... if you drop down to 10x buy in drop down.... keep moving up and down lvls as appropriate...

ok here's another noob question in .25/.50 limit game if u win a pot of $5.00 its considered 10 bigbets, what about in NL how would u express your win of $5.00 at same limit .25/.50 NL or $50 NL

thanks

I usually just consider NL sums in terms of fractions of a maximum buy-in, since that's the main criteria I use to assess the health of my BR when playing NL.

a Big Bet is always twice the big blind...

so in a .25/.50 NL game a big bet is 1$....

winning 5$ is winning 5 big bets at a 50$NL table
