Official rules on looking at mucked cards after a hand?

Postby mstzpt » Sun May 17, 2009 3:57 pm GMT

We have a friendly monthly Holdem game at our house. I had a situation at my table and it made me mad, but I'm having trouble determining if it was illegal. We had about 8 people at our table and I was in the hand with one other lady--everyone else folded. I bet the river and she folded. I threw in my cards and as one of the guys was gathering them to deal he picked them up, looked at them and showed his wife, who happened to be sitting next to him. I think it was totally wrong for him to look at them! I told him they didn't pay to see them and they shouldn't have looked. I've read that any player has the right to request to view a called hand, but in this case it wasn't called. Also, I know "show one, show all" is a rule so he & his wife had an unfair advantage over everyone at the table since no one else saw my cards. Since it's our home game I think we can make our own rule that if the hand is called you have to show if asked, but if everyone folds no one else can look unless the winning player makes the decision to show everyone. I just want to make sure I find the official rule on this if one exists. Thanks for any help you can give me!

If this was a play money game at the local orphanage and sister Teresa did this I’d jump across the table perform acts of violence on her that would make Hostel look like The Little Mermaid.

Ok that’s a slight exaggeration but if this happened to me I’d go f**king spare. When I pull the muck in to shuffle and a card turns over that reveals something about the last hand I feel awful and that’s an accident! Acts of poor etiquette get on my nerves to but this is just flat out cheating. F**k it tell me where they are I’ll kill them myself.

Yeah, as muck said this is totally wrong. Even if it's a home game, it's important to get into good habbits.

At our home game we have a rule that the first guy to get knocked out has to deal for the rest of the game, but in return can look at everyones cards. (it's a way to keep them in the game and stops them from going home early!) But even then, they aren't allowed to show anyone else.

This is absolutely inappropriate. If the people who play at this game are looking at mucked cards as if its normal, you need to post some clear rules.

I personally wouldn't play with that guy after that. I simply wouldn't invite him back to my game unless some serious apologies were offered.

Thanks for the responses. I'm in the process of writing up rules before the next poker night. Ok, to be perfectly honest I yelled a few "colorful words" at them across the table when they looked at my cards. It sounds like everyone thinks I was justified!

We also had a situation with the same couple where one was in the hand and asked the other one for advice. I don't know what the deal is with them, but they have both played enough to know better. I wasn't at the that table or I definitely would have let them have it.

Our main goal is to have fun but they're going to have to stop pulling that sh*t!

Completely and totally unacceptable. My brother did this once to me when I was first teaching him the game and I got up, left, and refused to teach him a thing for another month or two.

I saw someone do this at the casino once and was one of the guys yelling and screaming at the floor to kick the guy out.
