it was the first one i read, and i liked it way back then because it was basic and helped me learn the fundamentals. i've tried reading it a few days ago and it is just waaay to basic for me now. a solid book for beginners or those who havent read a poker book before.

When I first started I was engrossed in his book. Thought it was very enlightening and all that. Upon rereading I found a certain doorstop/paperweight/firestarting paper quality to it. In my opinion if you can learn on your own without much literature, do it. Poker books send so many people to the banker/deposit button it's unreal. Not sure how people can accually say that they didnt ready Super System or s similar book, find an idea that impressed them, and proceeded to make a donk out of themselves for the remainder of their role or at least some percantage of it. Poker books... Very helpful, but also a good way to lose your ass if you get a little mezmorized by something that sounded overly brilliant when you first read it.

actually for me SS1 was my turnaround book... i read a couple books and won a few bucks here and there but once i read SS it's like something just clicked... until i was no longer allowed back at the regular homegames I was tearing them apart..
consistently leaving 3+ buyins up 2-3 times a week... (this was a 20$ game blinds .25/.50 so a good haul)

All I have to say is I sucked at poker.I thought I was good,but I wasn't.Then,Harrington,Harrington,Harrington.If you read his books,listen to them,and still suck,you always will.I haven't said much here in a while,and I won't be soon after this,but if you think you can't learn poker from a book,WRONG.

Problem is that these days, everyone knows the Harrington formula, either because they have read it or the knowledge has filtered into the Poker community at large. Strong evidence of this is that almost everyone now overuses the "squeeze play," and everyone knows you have to push/fold if you have like 10 BB or less.
Because everyone knows the Harrington strategy and it has become the "standard," it is necessary to now develop counter-strategies to it. I plan on doing my own extensive research on it, but I still cannot recommend Harrington strongly enough. Although some of the strategies are not as effective as they were in 2004/2005, it is still great for thinking about the game and as a window into what about 90% of your opponents now consider "correct" tournament strategy.
