St. Catharines tournament interest

Postby Stu Kerr » Thu Sep 01, 2005 9:52 pm GMT

Hello all! I am new to hosting tournaments and am wondering of the interest there would be in holding a large tournament in St. Catharines. I am looking at October 29, with 160 players - paying top 10 ($2800 to win) with early bird entry raffles for cash.
Any input or suggestions would be appreciated.

thanks
Stu

Date has been set!

Postby Stu Kerr » Tue Sep 06, 2005 8:26 pm GMT

PokerFreak:
The date has been set for Saturday October 22. The tournament will have a max of 160 players (20 tables of 8) and be held at London Arms at the Pen Centre. I will be in BC until Sept 14 - you can e-mail me for more info and I will reply after the 14th. So far, there is a TON of interest and I believe that the field will fill quickly. Entry is $65, pays top 10, early bird raffles... - as I mentioned, I can e-mail you all the details after the 14th.
Hope to see you there.

October 23 tournament in St. Catharines

Postby Stu Kerr » Mon Sep 26, 2005 8:01 pm GMT

It's Official:

Sunday Ocotber 23 :spade:  :diamond: :club:
Texas Hold 'Em (NL) tournament at the Howard Johnson's in St. Catharines (Lake St. & QEW).
$60 entry
Payout
1st: $2625 or 35%
2nd: $1500 or 20%
3rd: $900 or 12%
4th: $600 or 8%
5th: $525 or 7%
6th: $450 or 6 %
7th: $375 or 5%
8th: $300 or 4%
9th: $225 or 3%
Payout monies listed based on full field of 150 players less tournament expenses.

Entry fees are to be paid to: Stuart Kerr (stuartkerr20@hotmail.com) or Jeff Murphy (jmurphy@cogeco.ca). Cash in hand is your entry, no promissory notes will be accepted. First 150 players to pay entry are in tournament. To help eliminate tournament administration, when entry fee is paid, you are committed to play, in the event you can not play - entrant is responsible for selling their seat – at the discretion of Tournament Director(s). No refunds will be given to those entrants who do not attend event once entry fee is paid.
Tournament instruction and seating begins at 10:00 on October 23 – if you are not in attendance, the Tournament Director assumes no responsibility as to your awareness of the events proceedings. Seating and tables will be predetermined by random draw - players will be seated as entries are received. .
Each player will receive $1000 in chips for their buy in (12 x $25, 7 x $100 = $1000). This is a no limit texas hold ‘em event. You are eliminated from the tournament when you lose all your chips – there are NO rebuys in this tournament. The last two remaining players from each tournament table (assuming a 150 player tournament, 150 players = 15 tables of 10 players) will proceed to the elimination table(s) of 30 players who will then play internally on three tables of 10 players – these three tables will play internally until 3 players remain at each respective table thus forming the final table of 9 players. The final table will not stop until one player holds all the chips. That player will be declared the 1st place finisher. The last player eliminated will be the 2nd place finisher, the second last player eliminated will be the 3rd place finisher, etc.

For those "out of towners", please e-mail me on how to get your entry to me.

Thanks
Stu

What are tourney expenses? For all I know that could be 90% of the prize pool's money?

Answers to your questions

Postby Stu Kerr » Thu Sep 29, 2005 7:16 pm GMT

PokerFreak:
the blinds will be going up every half an hour. The blind schedule is:
SB BB Ante
25 50
50 75
50 100
75 150
100 200
100 200 25
150 300 50
200 400 75
Color-up $25 chips
300 600 100
400 800 100
600 1200 200
800 1600 300
1000 2000 400
Color-up $100 chips
1500 3000 500
2000 4000 500
3000 6000 1000
4000 8000 1000
6000 12000 2000
8000 16000 2000
This will not be a quick tournament if we fill the field of 150 players. I estimate 6 - 8 hours - but that depends on how aggressive everyone plays.

Supafrey:
The tournament expenses are:
1) the rental of the banquet hall,
2) the rental of clay poker chips - approx 6000 chips,
3) the purchase of decks of cards (minor expense)
4) media to promote the event (minor expense)
If you do the math, you will see we are estimating, with a full field of 150 players, a payout of $7500. We estimate expenses to be approx $10 per player - not too bad considering we DO NOT profit from this tournament. If you have ever run a tournament this large, you will understand that it is NOT cheap to do so, and takes a great deal of time which you are not compensated for. That is why we cover our a$$ by listing the percentages if we do not get a full field. Rather than question where the money is going, take the time to do the math, and maybe appreciate the fact that someone is taking the time WITH NO COMPENSATION to host such an event. The math is in black and white, no need to question where the money is going!

Thanks for your interest and I hope to see you there.

Bla bla bla bla bla. That's all babble. Personally I'd never join any tourney where fees weren't EXPLICITLY expressed before hand. 50+10 is still a reasonable pool for a tourney, but it would have to be clear beforehand.

Like I said in my first post, this is the first large tournament I am running, so I guess I'll chalk that up to the learning curve. Sorry you're not playing.
