So how do you figure your % chance in winning a hand?

Postby BobS » Tue Apr 13, 2004 8:20 am GMT

I'm really starting to get into the mathmatics of the game. However, there's one thing I keep reading that I can't figure out.

It concerns pot odds. It says if you're getting 10-1 pot odds and you have better than 10-1 odds at winning the hand, you should play it. So how do you figure out what your odds at having the best hand are?

Figuring the pot odds is relatively simple, divide the total pot by the amount of the bet=answer. But how do I figure out if my chances at winning are better or worse than the answer?

The "Calculating Odds" link on the left should help you out. Basically, you have to count the number of "outs" you have to complete your hand. Hopefully, your hand that you are completing to is teh best hand.... not necessarily the nuts, but the hand that should beat your opponent.

so, once you've xeen the flop, you have two more cards to the river. Let's say you have two cards in your hand, an ace and king of spades. That's two cards out of a 52 deck. Once, the flop comes out, you have 47 cards you have not seen. If you need only that one spade to complete your hand, you then have 9 remaining cards for you to hit your flush. So, basically, 9 / 47 = a 20 percent chance to see it by the turn. Ultimately, that's 4:1 odds. If you calculate to the river, it's actually 1.9:1 odds. There's a little more math involved in explaining calculating to the river...
