I think I check on 6th street. I like the semi-bluff on 5th street. You took your shot but didn't make your hand on 6th street, you have almost no showdown value. Yes checking here may be weak. But, I hate to say it...I think you got read as a semi-bluff with a heart draw. You didn't raise preflop, the only way she is probably losing is if you have rolled-up trips, 58, T8, or possibly 66 or 99 in the hole.

Those are the hands that are beating your opponent if she has two-pair. My guess is villain folds to another heart hitting your board. Its hard to tell from the hand history, but she has two 8's in her hand at this point no? This makes itn hard for you to have a straight, impossible to have a straight, and unlikely to have a bigger two-pair. It looks like she successfully (knowingly?) induced a bluff out of you on 6th and 7th streets.

flush draws are tricky in stud, i think i played this one poorly, due to my poor position ... let me explain

once i have the 4 flush on 4th i have roughly 40 - 45% to make the flush depending on the amount of dead cards out there (closer to 45% here) ... i am taking this hand to the river

the way i usually try to play these hands is to try to get as much money into the pot as possible, which is why i try to mix up my play and raise 5th street with a 4 flush (that i got on 4th) rather than raising on 4th street. if i raise 4th street with a 7 and a 9 of hearts showing, it really gives my hand away.

the problem here is that im 2nd to act ... ideally with a flush draw, youd want to be acting last here so the you could get the action to go bet, call, call, raise, and now you're less likely to loose people

looking back at it, i got way too cocky with my hand ... for flush draws to be +EV you need to drag 2 or more people with you to 6th street, and at least one guy to call you down on 7th .. my raise eliminated people rather than got money in the pot

zinno there is a stud section is SS2. Also there has been a book put on on it by Tom McCovy that I have just ordered that looks like it has promise. I'll let you know how I like it after I get my copy and get it read.

there's a stud/8 section in SS2 by todd brunson, the stud hi section is in SS1 written by chip reese

if you're serious about stud, the only book you'll need to beat games is 7 card stud for advanced players by sklanksy ... its a tough read the first time through, but it makes sense after you've played for a bit

most hands in stud are won by two pair, so the idea is to have a higher two pair than the other guy, you will win a lot of pots with aces/kings up vs. some idiot who thinks 8's and 4's are great ... granted you will lose an occasional pot when you don't make two pair, which is frustrating, but you're playing +EV in the long run

the section in 7CS4AP thats most applicable to online poker is the section on loose games ... cause thats what most online low-limit stud games are like

The SS1 stud section is the only book I've read on the subject and I think it helped me out a lot.

One thing I did was play 7-stud for a while, then read the book. It really helps all that information stick if you play a little before reading.

re: the busted flush draw tho, i try not to be too aggressive with 4 to the flush esp. at the lower limits where peole not only don't believe what they see, they don't even seem to be looking!

The old addage is true enough, in low limit poker you have to show down the best hand to take the pot.
