So I was playing a single table tourney yesterday and.....

Postby Nate PT » Fri Apr 09, 2004 2:18 pm GMT

I was playing a single table tourney at pokerroom and I was playing really tight and was at about 3rd out of 8 remaining players for chip count. I had just won a big pot the hand before with a straight and I get Ace (diamods) 4 off suit second position so i fold, flop is King Queen 10 all diamonds, turn is the jack of diamonds and I folded a royal flush! Someone had an ace so he wouldve called all my bets too...I was pretty shocked about that but I still won the tourney so it was all good. Just thought Id share that, Have any of you guys gotten a royal flush before? That wouldve been my first.

I got one once before playing Pineapple, which is a lot like hold'em, at Paradise. Like you said, someone else had a straight so it was a nice pot at the end. I play single table tourneys at pokerroom a lot. What is your screen name? I'll see if I see you one night.

Oddly, between Late December 2003 and early March 2004 I had 3 Royal Flushes online at UB. The December one was play chip only, the other 2 were micro limit real money. All were NL Hold'em, 1 real $ had 2 people bet all-in into the pot for me for a nice fat pot win. None of them were good for the UB bonus jackpot as a Royal was already made for that time period.

I keep waiting for my next one...Think I got spoiled and expect another one anytime now. :D

I'm not a pro (obviously) but i believe he made the right play by folding A4o, especially if his strategy was to play super-tight, A4 really can get you into trouble, especially with 8 people, kicker will get beat if you flop an A. And you will be compelled to call, after, what else could you wait for, besides the straight, that will happen once in a blue moon.

Not trying to start an argument, i think it's all good that we can talk about it and add our own opinions. Anyway, unlucky on the old royal flush thing, but you made the right play, don't let these things effect you, it's your play before the flop that mattered, not what came after.

BTW, do you think it matters where you are in the tourney to be able to call certain hands, surely 3rd is ok, shouldn't effect your decisions, should it?

he made ABSOLUTELY the right play folding A-4 offsuit in early position...

it is a crap hand that is overplayed by people who LOSE at poker.

the ONLY way I play A-4 offsuit is from the button or one before the button when there are a LOT of limpers in front of me... if someone raises behind me, I give it up...and I'm only playing it for the straight possibility...

I fold if there is an ACE on the flop... UNLESS there is A and a 4 on the flop... even then... I'm watching closely for top two pair against my top and bottom pair...

playing A-4 offsuite too much will cost you a lot of money... period

I've made a straight flush once in play money and my nut flush lost to one once in a tournament.

And I agree with fever. Axo is just a crap hand and should really never be played from any position. It only becomes valuable shorthanded with big blinds. That's exactly the situation you see on TV all the time and that's why all the newbies play it. What do you expect to get from that hand? Your ace is worthless, and your two pair is marginal. I'd be looking for a set or boat, but I wouldn't play it in the first place.

actually in our homegames which we play a couple times a week, one of my friends has hit two in the month of april. im not sure exactly how many hands ive played, but ive read that the odds of getting one are 1 in 630,000 hands...and im pretty sure we're a few short of 1,260,000 this month!!!! RIDICULOUS!

Webmaster, noone had raised it, but I wouldnt have even limped with that hand i was first to act and it was a pretty aggressive table I knew someone would raise it behind me. Ill sometimes play A4o but only if I like the position and have a good read on most of the players, 8 handed I knew if I hit and ace on the flop someone would have me outkicked so I didnt want to play it.

You definately made the right choice to fold A,4o. Sure it would have won for you that hand, but most of the time it will just cost you money.
