A freeroll is a tournament that is free to play. Sometimes they pay cash, sometimes an entry into another tournament or some other prize.

I'm 30 - not so long ago I was in a situation similar to yours. I also have kids now, which puts things in a different perspective :D
I'd say if I learned my son had accessed something that involves money + the internet and I did not understand, I'd immediately be on the defensive too, so don't be too tough on your parents :D
What I can say is that if my son told me, 'hey dad please listen to me for just 30 mins, then after that I'll accept your opinion', then I'd definitely be impressed by his maturity. If he then proceeded to describe what others have mentionned in this thread (why it's not antisocial, why it's not a 'bad' thing or 'addictive', etc), then I'd not only give him the green light, but I'd also be damn proud of him for his honesty and intelligence.
On the other hand the comments along the lines of 'screw your parents, take their c. cards or do it behind their back' - well these are both self-destructive and immature - EXACTLY the reason why your parents were worried about online poker in the first place. Don't fight fire with fire.
Let us know how you get on :D

Re: Playing Online
So what did you do in the end?
I play for free for now at this site: http://www.*************
But I would be happy to know if you managed to solve the age problem.

Re: Playing Online
It only depends on you if you are going to be addicted to online poker or not. Make sure that your have a credit limit for you to know when to stop playing and pay the bill first before you play online again.
