ManCave

Postby zinn0 » Wed Dec 12, 2007 8:13 pm GMT

I've finally convinced the missus that I need to remodel one of the rooms in our home and make it into a mancave. The room I'm remodeling is an ideal room for this because it has thick oak trim, oak pocket doors, an oak chest that is built into the wall and has a very large bay window, very mannish I guess. Anyway, I'm looking for tips/ideas/suggestions for just about everything, (i.e. decoration, furniture, you-name-it).

The room is 15'x 11.5'. Not huge, but not really tiny, either.

I'm definitely going to have a computer with my oak roll-top desk in there.

I'm game for any and all suggestions you punks might have.

- Pool table, ldo.
- Cabinet for whiskey.
- With lots of wooden stuff in the room you probably don't want a humidor and cigars, but you should! :)
- Lots of manly books about war.
- Some kind of big comfortable chair.

It’s pretty heavy, I’m scared that if she tried she might accidentally put it through our French doors :\

Mine is still developing, at some point I need to get rid of some kid toys and install a bar. But so far, big screen (48" I think) w/ surround sound and HD. Big brown leather sectional w/ recliner and hide-a-bed.

Behind that is my pool table and dart board. Plush light brown short shag carpet, forrest green walls, tan ceiling, cannister dimmer lights sunken into the ceiling.

Still need a few things, but classic sports pics/artwork and signed framed sports pics on the walls.

I thought that I liked mine, then I saw some of my neighbors (one is a contractor). They have full wet bars/kitchens w/ TVs built in, popcorn machines all work cabinets, beautiful.

I don't think the Zinn needs books on sex. He seems to have mastered it with one kid produced already...and what seems to be a very happy little lady.

Zinn0 buddy a few ideas come to mind. Lets break this down into sections.

Most people would start with a bar. Seeing how space is limited then I suggest this getting one of those electric coolers and put it in the oak footlocker. This hides it from the kid and possibly the in-laws if need be. Not only that but it saves you a good 4-6 square feet of space a bar would take up.

Second, think poker table. A fold away number would be nice or build one in the wall. You heard of a murphy bed? Well make a murphy poker table.

You'll need plenty of room for seating. Think couch for sure but also have other seating. Like some of those thin swivel recliners. If you can find them, and they do make them, some with built in cup holders would be nice. That way the clutsy ass friend who always spills crap has less of a chance of screwing up your very own man paradise.

A pool table would be nice but with only 15'x15' of space, I think the pool table is out unless you want bumper pool (can't see why on Earth anyone would unless your English and into mini snooker) or one of those bar size mini tables (ewwwww).

A humidor would be nice unless your a non-smoker or don't want the smoke lingering around the house. If you do then I suggest a fan and vent for pushing the smoke on out of the room or your TV will get awefully smoke covered and make the football games look cloudy.

Now lets talk TV. I know your an avid gamer and probably a football watcher, so we know a big screen is most likely the TV of choice. You could do one better and thicken the wall you mount it on and then inset it into the wall and give it some doors to hide it away. This would be really important if you do put in a pool table. Imagine someone trying some stupid trick shot sending a ball into your big screen TV (bloody bastard would loose his balls if it was me).

Lets talk stereo. You most likely can't have a wall blaster unit but some good sounding audio equipment is always a plus.I suggest Bose. They are a little high in price but the units are small and the sound is dynamic without killing your wallet. A good Bose system with speakers and all will only set you back about $1000.

Don't forget the walls. Your going to want something on the walls in the way of a dead animal or fish. If hunting is a sport you enjoy then show it off with a wall mount or at least a rack of antlers. If it's fishing you like then by all means get a stuffed fish, preferably one you caught, and hang it on the wall.

Ok lets talk security. Password the computer or create a buddy account. Do one better and set it up so that only someone on the admin account can download, install programs or alter system settings.
Other security would be password protect the pay channels. You don't want to come in one day and find out that stupid ass brother-in-law of yours (if you have one) done rented about $40 worth of porn at your expense. Now for room security, keep a taser hidden in the room. This is for that poor bastard friend who gets drunk and can't take a bad beat or can't stand the fact that he sucks at poker, video games or even tiddly winks. Then he gets mad and proceeds to take it out on your man cave. Put a stop to it fast and what better way then to shock him with 100,000 volts of wonderful stun gun. One last bit of security. You might not mind the wife snooping around in the cave, because she trusts you and you can trust her, but to keep that pesky ass in-law from enjoying your cave while your not home, think door lock. You can get a card reader lock, key lock or a simple combination lock but be sure to get one.

You have what many want but few have buddy. That is a chance at a little peice of heavin in your castle. Enjoy it, treasure it and make it something your really going to enjoy.

Oh one last peice of advice...don't invite Gary Coleman over...see what happens when you do..
