PLO: Tough Bottom Set Spot

Postby xDiamond_CutteRx » Thu Jul 10, 2008 2:28 am GMT

$0.10/$0.25 6-max. Hero is in SB with [Kd Kh 4c 4s]. UTG raises pot, ALL call. Hero calls for set value. BB calls.

FLOP [As 9h 4d]
Pot: ~$5

Hero checks. All check to button. Button bets pot, leaving himself about $15 behind. Hero covers. Most other players have similar stacks to Hero (about $24 before any further action), or they cover.

1. What is our play here?
2. Would it be different if we closed the action or had position?
3. Would a bet/fold, bet/call, or bet/raise line be preferable to a check/"X" line in this hand?

General feel: Probably, no one in the middle has much of a hand. No real wraps available, no flush draw, and unlikely anyone is slow-playing a set. Button's range probably does not include AAxx (he is the type to 3-bet this hand), but it is possible. A bluff is also possible given everyone has checked a dryish flop.

"Would it be different if we closed the action or had position?"

It's always a great advantage to have position at big bet poker.

I would say you still might have to be careful of the UTG player. He raised pot then checked on A high dry board. That makes me suspicious but then again its plo25.

I think betting out is my preference in this situation. I think you get to find out where you are a lot more than checking. A raise on this board is probably a safe laydown.

As for how you played it, I don't think I can muck a set to the button although 99 is certainly in his range I'd expect. I would probably just call. The worst thing to do is blast him back the pot and put too many chips in only for UTG to pot all in over the top with three aces.
