NJ Clay
Manimal,
Here are the basic differences as I see them.
Classic is done by Pokerchips.com
New is done by Blue Chip
The Classics have brass powder for a little more weight and a denser feeling where Blue Chip does not.
The Classics and New are both excellent chips I just prefer the Pokerchips.com product a little more than Blue Chip. Their quality is a little better, but their product is harder to come by because of this.
More detail, more time.
The Classic came in .25,.50,$1,$5,$25,$100,$500
Anything over a $5 is very hard to come by. But really all of it is hard to come by. As these sets were bought for home use only there are very, very few folk willing to get rid of them. I have paid as much as $1.50 per for the $500's As I understand NJ will eventually have a $500 chip it just takes a long time to do a qty of clay so this one is not yet available. If you choose a New set you could always buy the 50 or whatever you need of the $500 later.
Hope this helps a little
Michael

Michael
I would not normally take issue with Michael on the subject of chips, but my experience is different in one respect - I have samples of pokerchip.com and NJ clays, and using a balance scale I can attest that they are pretty much identical in weight. The smallest weight I have is a half-ounce, but using coins I could determine that both of these are just about 9g chips.
Interestingly both buypokerchips.com Vintage Vegas samples come in around 8.5g - these are supposed to be made by pokerchips.com (and also contain brass powder), but have noticeably less heft even without the benefit of a scale.
I agree with Michael that the pokerchips.com chips feel denser. But then so do many cheap plastics.
Cheers,
Peter

Someone should weight them both with a digital scale. I would trust a digital scale alot more when dealing with weight in grams.

Thanks all:
I have actually spoken with buypokerchips.com, and they confirm they are basically just a reseller of the "stock" designs of pokerchips.com. If you'd prefer something custom over stock designs, they definitely refer you to pokerchips.com. So, the two products are very similar indeed.

Spot Removal
I am surprised that the removal of the spot it an issue.
I have had my set for sometime and none of the spots
are lifting, and I don't think you could remove it it one piece.
You probably could pick it off in small peices but it would take
some effort. The spots are molded into the chips with some
extreme pressure. This problem has never been a thought for me.
