Cash games or Tournaments
I've just started playing for real money after playing for three years play money. I have tried both cash and tournaments but seem to like the tournaments better. I think they give more entertainment for the price, plus if you take one down you get paid off pretty well. My best finish was 168 out of 3100+ on pokerstars a few days ago. Doubled my money $1.10 to $2.65 or whatever it was.. Which do you perfer and why?

i prefer cashgames because there is more room to play. everyone sits with 100 big blinds which brings alot of room to maneuver and make plays and exploit your opponnents. in tournaments after a certain amount of time your stack will get short which will force you to stick it in which will have everything come down to a coinflip, each and every time. going deep in a tournament is probably the coolest feeling in poker, but cash games is where you can really hone your skills and where individual hands actually mean something
welcome to the board by the way!

I got into poker after seeing some tournaments on TV and always though I'd be a tournament player.
However cash offers so much flexibility, in terms of time (ie you can play for as long as you want, take breaks etc) and in terms of play (you can always rebuy)
I think I made most of my BR from tournament success, however I spend most of my time playing cash games.
both are fun in their own way, but there is no worse feeling then getting deep in a MTT and then losing a coin flip, or getting coolered or even worse getting bad beat without showing nothing for your time.

On the other hand, there is not better feeling the going deep in a tournament and cashing.

Once you start playing a lot you stop enjoying cashing pretty much entirely and are terribly disappointed to not get the disproportionately bigger payouts that top 3 places usually get.

If you are mostly playing for entertainment, then stick with the cheap SnG type tourneys. For myself, I find it very difficult to care about winning at microstake cash games. I don't feel that way so much about the microstake SnG's because at least I can come away with a 'win'.

For now I'm in it for entertainment while I learn. Becuase there is such a difference between play money and real money I have some experience to obtain first. But I hope to get to a level of play where I can make money. You know just like everyone else on this site
Maybe I should re-phrase the question: Between tournamnents and cash games which one provides the best learning exerience?

It Depends

It depends on what you want to do. If you want to play tournaments, playing tournaments provides the best practice. If you want to play cash games playing cash games gives the best practice.
Really.
I end up playing more cash games because I just don't have the TIME to play large tournaments. I do fit in little SnGs from time to time.
Welcome.
