How do you call a raise?

Postby gumby_ng » Fri Jul 02, 2004 11:02 am GMT

Having never played live, how does one call a raise?
With the amount that you are putting in, or minus the amount
you have to call?

ie. To call, I need to put in $5, let's say I want to put in $10,
do I say "raise 5" or "raise 10"

You would say "raise to 10".

in a limit game, just saying raise or putting out double the bet is enough.

in NL, be careful. You need to state what you are raising. If the bet is $5 and you put a $25 chip out there, it is assumed that you are calling and need change. If you dont state that you are raising, then it is a call. However, if you put 3 $5 chips out there, then a $10 raise is assumed. Only larger chips indicate a call-not a raise.

Make sure to ask the house rules, or if you dont want to announce that you are a new player to that casino, just watch others closely.

some casinos u have to verbally say raise. I played in a tourny was in small blind i think at this point it was 300/600. my 300 was out i had about 4500 in chips. few called the BB, i tossed out 900(500 chip and 4 100 chips) to raise it to 1200 with out saying anything. BB says check all the chips go to the middle and dealer flops the cards and i said, how can there be a check when i raised. he said u have to say raise. and he went into the pot to give me back my chips. You would think by tossing out those chips it would be a raise since i only had to toss out 300 to call. But some other casinos the chips do the talking.
Say your UTG, blinds are 200/400 and you toss out a 1000 chip, the dealer might ask call or raise,if u have no other chips, smaller, or if u toss out 8-100chips, then he would assume its a raise and say raise for you.
