What book to read

Postby mudsliptones » Wed Jul 23, 2008 8:52 am GMT

OK, I want to read up on poker

Now, wich books do I best read?
I live in belgium and don't have VISA so they have to be available in belgium or the netherlands

some books I can buy:

Daniel Negreanu Power Hold'em Strategy
Poker for Dummies
The Theory of Poker by David Sklansky
Poker Wisdom of a Champion by Doyle Brunson
Ace on The River - An Advanced Poker Guide by Barry Greenstein
Super System by Doyle Brunson
Super System 2 by Doyle Brunson
Play Poker Like the Pros Book by Phil Hellmuth Jr.

I am interested in those books which help me on my texas holdem play.
I heard the Theory of Poker by David Sklansky is a must have book (does it also help with texas play?)

the super system books by Doyle Brunson are also good from what I read...

your opinions please....

Out of those, the only book that will remotely improve your NL Hold'em play is Daniel's book.

I would also recommend Professional No Limit Hold'em, and Harrington on Cash Games or Harrington on Hold'em, the latter being for tournaments.

Super System 2 is good, but I found the NL section to be abysmal... the other sections in the book on other games are quite good. The original Super System is outdated. Ace on the River is a great read about Poker, but it will not have a lot of insight into the play of actual hands. Hellmuth's book is a complete joke and no one should ever buy it. Theory of Poker is phenomenally good, but if you are mostly interested in Hold'em I'd buy one of the books I recommended above.

i woudlnt take The Theory of Poker by David Sklansky out of that list. Although what he says is pretty similar to harringtons books.

Theory of Poker is really the poker bible. I don't think you need much more than that and enough experience to just start doing your own thing.

Forums and discussing hands are a must however. You still need to be able to figure out who gives crappy advice and who gives good advice - and it is not always easy to tell.

I wouldnt like to open new thread so...

Does there exist a book/articles that specialises on how to play 6-handed No-Limit Hold'em S'n'G turnaments?

Many thanks!

Not specifically that game, no, but Colin Moshman's Sit'n'Go Strategy would probably be the closest thing and most useful for you. That covers all aspects of those types of tournaments.

Harrington on Hold Em

Postby DrunkBlonde » Sat Jan 17, 2009 8:50 am GMT

I really liked Harrington on Hold Em volumes I and II. They are fantastic for tournament players. Brought my game to a new level. I still go back and read them now and then, especially if I feel my game is slipping.

OK, I was thinking about getting into Omaha and I need you to recommend some literature. I heard Hwang's Pot Limit Omaha is solid reading, but is it suitable for beginner? Any other books? Thanks for replies!

I love THoP (my first poker book) and think every player should read it, but it can be very dry.

Harringtons books are much more like applied poker and easier to read.

I think they complement each other well.

By reading The theory Of Poker,I learned that even the pot odds, bluffing, free cards and even the starting hands.Sklansky's concept of these theory gives out the factors to consider on a proper decision on what to do in a game of poker .
