Three PLO8 tourney hands

Postby HalfSugar » Thu Apr 02, 2009 5:34 pm GMT

Playing the cheapo $11 PLO8 SCOOP Event and currently at the first break. Can someone with a brain analyse these three hands for me please. Bear in mind that my PLO8 game is f*cking awful :-D

Hand 1 - how can I play this better and what do I do on the river?

PokerStars Game #26651178525: Tournament #200904021, $10+$1 Omaha Hi/Lo Pot Limit - Level I (25/50) - 2009/04/02 16:44:17 ET

GenoTHP: checks
*** RIVER *** [6h 2s Ad 6s] [4d]
Papadeeone: bets 500
GenoTHP: ???

Results later.

Hands 2 & 3 - am I wrong to fire out on the flop in a multi-way pot with such a big draw or is it just a coincidence that both times I killed all the action? I could understand that the way I am playing turns my hand face up against better players but this is a 7,000 player $11 donk-o-rama!

You for sure need to raise hands 2 and 3 preflop. Those are premium hands in PLO8. Betting big on the flop is fine, but you can probably bet smaller, because those are about as close to gin flops as you can get, and giving cheap cards really isn't going to hurt you that much.

Hand 1 should be folded on the river. If you're betting the flop here, it's not really so much for value as it is to maybe get a bad low to fold in hopes of picking up the whole pot now. But once you get called, the jig is up and you don't really want to put any more money in. If a low is betting you off the pot on the river, so be it, but you can't profitably call for half here (I suppose it's conceivable you have the best hand in one or both directions if your opponent is loose and vastly underestimates your hand strength, and in limit this is probably a call for one bet, but 500 chips is a lot when the most likely scenario is you're just getting them back at best).

I play way too passive pre-flop in PLO8 at the moment because it's such a post-flop game. That's something I need to work on.

I did let hand 1 go although the guy never showed. I figured, like you, that I'm chucking in 500 chips to get them back +250 at best as my A7 is nowhere near the high 99% of the time. His sudden pot sized bet screamed A35X but I guess we'll never know!

I just busted after playing really poorly after the second break but here's a good fold I managed after flopping the nut flush draw a little earlier. It's not exactly mind blowing but it's not bad for me:

You can fold that hand preflop tbh. Playing it on the button isn't terrible, but you're basically hoping for like a K-T-2 flop or something like that. Folding the flop is extremely trivial, because you're almost always going to be scared even if you do make a flush, because the Ace is the card any given opponent is more likely to have if he's voluntarily entered over any other.

Hand 1: I don't really bet this flop multiway. You have no real low and your high hand is weak/vulnerable. As soon as he bets river you can fold it.

Hand 2 and 3: I raise both PF and I would bet pot on the flop in both. My PLO/8 game usually consists of me potting flops and turns most of the time. Although DC is right, they are pretty much monsters, but I just prefer to pot anyway.

Hand 4: Muck pf. Hands like KK83 are poor hands at PLO8. I wouldn't even raise this on the button unless it was pretty late in the tournament and I have a lot of chips. When the flop is paired (Especially AA2 at PLO8) You can fold everything pretty much.

I played it too and got it AI with the nut low draw and two pair against aces. Board paired and I was out.

Interesting posts. I clearly have a lot to learn but it's definitely possible to improve quickly at this game if I put in the man hours. It's by far my favourite non-holdem game because of the sheer number of permutations of any given situation on every street and since I never play holdem online, PLO8 is my game of choice the rare times I fire up PS.
