How does REVERSE psychology fare? How about reading others?

Postby dubfrontsidah » Fri Jul 17, 2009 6:34 pm GMT

As a teen I recall attempting to use reverse psychology (Acting like my hand was bad when it was good and good in my physical body movements when it was bad to get people to bet/fold) on my friends.

I can't remember if this was ever sucessfull or not.

Is using strategies like attempting reverse psychology on other players or attempting to read other players smart and integral to poker or is this just a noob thought process?

I can't imagine much people would win big money consistantly by bluffing or by reading others facial figures.

Or is the steriotype true

Welcome to the forum.

I think you are are asking two massive, very different questions.

From experience you may be better asking more of a specific question if you want a response.

How about starting by telling us about your experineces of reading others.

-Can you do it?
-What do you look for when reading others?
-How good are you at reading others?
-Do you think people can read you and if so, what are your key tells etc

From a personal point of view, I spend very little time trying to use reverse Psychology as the standard of players I play against usually have more to worry about than 'the other players'. However on the flip side, this also means they are totally unaware of how they are acting. This means a large part of my game is built around reading other players body language etc.

Once again, welcome to the forum.

In real life I have a fantastic background of reading others emotions.. probably about 1000x more experience than the average American because of my past situations I have been in.

(Where as most high schoolers went to a public highschool I was shipped off to a "Therapeutic Rehabilitation Treatment Center" (Don't ask why)

I personally look in the eyes, facial muscles, mouth and forehead. Basically every part of the head including the neck and even shoulders.

For me, no I can be stone cold dead and not reveal anything (You have to learn this technique when you are in a "Therapeutic Rehabilitation Treatment Center" to avoid seeming like you have problems so you can get out of incarceration faster, ironically)

Imo betting patterns etc will give you a far better read than physical tells ever will. Though not to dismiss them totally but only as another possible source of information contributing to your final decision.

as far as know Mike Caro is the senior authority of the physical tells of poker, not sure if his book is any good or not.
