I start playing tourneys today!
I’ve decided to start my crusade to conquer the tourneys.
I’ve been playing poker for around 7 years and have only ever played 2 or 3 MTT’s. Believe it or not, I have never cashed! My whole time has been spent on the cash games.
So, my plan is to play less poker and but spend more time studying my play and reviewing my hands. I’m also going back to the Harrington on hold’em books starting with vol 1, which I will hopefully find as a useful tool to inhance my game.
I don’t plan to play in any tourney greater than around $6, although if I need to buy in for more it’s not really a problem.
So my first questions are;
1. Should I start on freezeouts, re-buys, or both (or does it matter)?
And
2. What’s the opinion on late registration tourneys? (Is buying in after an 45-50 minutes a good idea for a newbee?)
If you have any other tips for me i'm open to suggestions and help.
thanks

1) Freezeouts. Rebuys are very gambly and could start costing you a lot of money during the rebuy period. If you are happy to potentially rebuy like 10 times then go ahead and play those.
2) No not a good idea to buy in late. Structures in general are pretty bad online and for the tournies you're going to be playing the blinds will be massive compared to your stack and it will just be push or fold poker. Not ideal for someone who is trying to learn.
Good luck.

I hate late registration tourneys like none other. Whenever I buy early, it never goes well, and then when people come in at the end of the hour, they're just shoving non-stop. It irritates the hell out of me.
If you want to try tourneys, my suggestion is to start grinding the 180-man SnG's for awhile. It's a constant environment, and you get more chances to play early stages, middle stages, bubbles, late stages, and final tables more often. At least until you get some experience, this might be a good way to learn.
Rebuys are costly, but I like them because of all the dead money, and you only have to pay rake once, making the cost less significant compared to the overall prize pool.

Re: I start playing tourneys today!
Is there any middle ground for playing rebuys but limiting the amount of times I rebuy?
For example, last night I played a $3 rebuy. I joined the tourney 45 minutes into the game and basically decided to either fold preflop or push all-in everyhand. I built my stack to around 11,000 (i started with 1,500).
Then, the rebuy/add-on period ended and the table tightened up.
I was just wondering whether buying in once for $3 and then spending the first hour pushing or folding would pay diviends long term because of the extra money on offer when i start to cash?

There is value in rebuys no doubt, the thing is tho, I don't like the idea of limiting myself to set amount of buyins.
I feel like you are setting urself at a disadvantage when you do something like that. A friend of mine likes to just buy in once into them. Personally I like to just keep getting my money in good or gamble in spots I might fold in freezeout and if I busto just rebuy.

Re: I start playing tourneys today!
My advice would be to start with freezeouts to begin with, I think all ps' guaranteed pools have 3k stacks now which should be enough and don't last stupidly long aswell. So , maybe try some of them.
Also, yes, there are rebuys that have 1r1a. So if you REALLY want to try rebuys, they're good value too i guess.
I never late reg, most online tournaments, the blinds go up quick enough as it is, why miss out on the low blinds when you can double up in that first 30/45mins with a nice hand, where if you buy in late, and you got like 3k with bb about to be 150, now you start with 20bb, which is pretty crap imo. This is just my stance, I don't like ever buying in late, but I don't hate people who do ,cos it boosts the pool neway.
In terms of tips, its all well and good re reading harrington, but heed this warning, like 90% of tournament players have probably read the harrington series themselves, so for whatever reason, they'll know why your doing what with what "M" at particular points in tourneys.
Scratch that last point actually, you dont plan on playing higher than $6.
Best advice is to , value town these micro stakes players, dont do crazy bluffs if you get much resistance cos you will undoubtedly come up against people who leave you scratching your head when they call you down light.
Save the big bluffs for people you KNOW can lay a marginal hand down.
And the same old stuff applies, utilise position, steal as much as they'll let you, don't tilt, play agressive and blah blah blah.
Good luck

Re: I start playing tourneys today!
i know most people say u should gamble in rebuys and get a big stack bla bla bla , but realy every time i went deep in 3r i was in for min
rebuy immed, play normal game, and ull have over avg stack after rebuy almost every time since so many people just spew off
once u see who players who gamble too much are u can comfortably get it in with AQ+ ATs+ 88+ and even much wider vs players who just shove every time obv
also the 1r1a and 2r1a mtts are great, rebuy at start and play a nice deep stacked mtt
