Split pot question

This has happened numerous times in an online game I play.

Player one will have two pairs.
Player two will have three of a kind.

Player one and player two end up splitting the pot (with player two getting a larger portion).

I thought a three of a kind always beat two pairs so I do not understand why the player with two pairs would get even a part of the pot. I've tried to figure it out on my own, but no luck.

Can anyone help?

Three of a kind does beat two pair. The only thing I could think of is that the two pair is winning the side pot.

This is basically when the three of a kind is all in and the betting continues with another two players in the pot. Once a player is all in if the other two have chips left a side pot is created so the betting can continue. The all in player cannot win this other pot, it's only between the remaining two players and it depends on who has the best hand between those two who wins it.

This may be what is happening.

Player A has AA and goes all in
Player B has AK and goes All in
Player C has KK and goes All in.


main pot (that all 3 can win) is 300 x 3 = 900
side pot (that only player B and C can win) 200 (500-300) x 2 = 400

Player B has a pair of aces and wins the side pot of 400
Player A has three of a kind and wins the main pot of 900

Split pots are rare but it might happen if both players play the board, or in stud or draw when they have flushes of different suits, that happen to have the same exact rank of cards.
